ColorBrightonGreen - Where to Take Your Recyclables

ColorBrightonGreen has headed in a new direction and moved away from collection of recyclables at the Brighton Farmers' Market. We have updated our website to provide information on where you can take the recyclable items that you have been collecting.

We are happy to report that one of our ColorBrightonGreen volunteers has agreed to collect six categories of recyclables at her home in the Winton Road/Highland Avenue area. Those items are
  1. Gently used or new school supplies
  2. Empty, clean personal care and beauty containers
  3. Oral care packaging
  4. Used contact lens and blister packaging
  5. Brita brand water filters
  6. Corks
To make arrangements to drop off these items, send an email to melissacarlson22@gmail.com. For a listing of the specific items in categories 2, 3, and 4 above, see the ColorBrightonGreen website. This website page also provides information on community locations where you can take other items that cannot be placed in your curbside recycle containers.

Electric Cars 101: What You Need to Know About EVs

If you are thinking about driving greener with an electric car, you probably wonder what your options are and need answers to questions before you step away from your gas-powered vehicle. Electric vehicles make up about 2% of the new cars on the road. Still, even 1% of the 15 million new cars and trucks sold each year is a lot of vehicles. And that figure will increase as manufacturers continue to introduce new models into the mainstream. Join us for a breakdown of the different EV car options. We show you the basics of what you need to know about charging, range, ownership costs, safety features and more, so you can choose the right electric vehicle that meets all your needs.

Stewards of the Earth Campaign

ColorBrightonGreen is looking for places of worship to be stewards of the Earth. We are hoping to find open spaces to plant trees this coming spring. Local places of worship often have large areas of land that are not shaded. CBG would like to help fill those places with hardwood shade trees (oak, maple, catalpa, sycamore). CBG will help plant, water and replace dead trees. We would like to plant 5 or more trees at each location. If you are a member of or know of a place of worship that would be interested, please contact Mitch Nellis at mitchellnellis@hotmail.com.

Curbside Bin Recycling Info - When In Doubt, Throw It Out!

Avoid common mistakes like putting your recyclables in plastic bags (the bag and everything in the bag will go to the landfill instead of getting recycled) or putting any kind of styrofoam in curbside recycling. For more info, visit and read carefully their page on residential recycling.  Monroe County no longer recycles by number, they recycle plastic by shape now. When in doubt, throw it out! "Wishcycling" only contaminates the recyclable materials and can make the whole lot no longer recyclable.

Want to recycle your lids? Reattach them to their original container, otherwise they will be too small for the machines and will not be recycled.
