Librarian Retirement

One of my favorite movies of all time is “It’s a Wonderful Life”. George Bailey thinks that the world would be better off if he had never been born. By the way, this movie was a big flop when it was released, but has since become a classic Christmas tradition for many. As with George, I have been thinking about my “employment life” a lot lately. You see, after twenty and one-half years with the library, I will be retiring as of January 7, 2022. I started in 2001 driving the Bookmobile for the County Library and was off on the ride of my life! Do I regret it, wish it had never happened, never! I have enjoyed this ride immensely and are there things I regret, wish I had done better, of course! However, we are not perfect and I have no Clarence to take me back and show me the difference I may have made, but I hope I did. That is, make a difference. Thank you to everyone who I have come to know over the years and thank you for making it “A Wonderful Life”!!!

— Donell

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a self-paced early literacy program for kids and their grown ups with a simple goal— read 1000 books to your child before they enter kindergarten. A goal of reading 1000 books can sound daunting, but by reading just one book a day to your child, you will have read 365 books in one year, 730 books in two years, and 1095 books in three years. And yes, you can read the same book multiple times.

You can complete the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program with a printed packet of all reading logs, or online through the ReadSquared app at dubcolib.readsquared.com. If you have already started on paper and would like to transition to the online program, first set up your account in ReadSquared, then call the Asbury branch (582-0008) or email us with your child’s name and the number of books you’ve completed, and we’ll get your online account all caught up.

The generosity of the Friends of the Dubuque County Library District allows us to provide three free books to participants, one each at registration, after reading 500 books, and upon completion of the program. We are grateful for their support in offering this early literacy program to our community!

Register for the online version or visit your local branch to sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.
