This Month's Production Tip:
Three Point Lighting
Let's talk about basic subject lighting. Three point lighting is a very common way to light your subject. When using the three point lighting method, you will use three lights; one acting as the key light, another acting as a fill light, and the third acting as your backlight.

Key Light:
  • Placed on the left or right side of the camera (on the left side in the photo above)
  • Used to illuminate the main area of your subject
  • The greater the angle of the key light to the camera, the more dramatic the look can be
Fill Light:
  • Placed on opposite side of the camera than the key light
  • Used to fill in some of the shadows created by the key light, hence the name “fill light"

Back Light:
  • Placed behind the subject
  • Used to illuminate the back of the head, and shoulders.
  • Using a backlight separates your subject from the background

Thank you for reading and we hope to see you at WHCA or one of the two communities that we proudly serve. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us, as the WHCA staff looks forward to working with you!
