How to Get the Best Rebates for Horticultural Lighting
Source: EC&M Magazine / Randy Young

It seems almost comical that humans have spent hundreds of years trying to find a replacement for a seemingly endless resource: the sun. But humankind is not often happy with the status quo; they want things bigger, faster, and better. For example, they want to grow plants in places that aren't typically hospitable to them, so they turned to electric lighting to grow plants indoors or to supplement available sunlight.

Anybody who has ever driven in the dark knows the benefit of good headlights. Such a small piece of a car’s overall construction is so crucial to visibility and safety.

Over the years, improvements to headlights in the United States largely revolved around simply making them brighter. Meanwhile, the rest of the world began experimenting with in-car technology to adapt a vehicle’s headlights to better light the world around them. Meanwhile, the US.was left in the stone age with its headlight tech being limited to rudimentary features like auto high beams. Thanks to the new infrastructure bill, that’s about to change.

DS: IES publishes consumer lighting guide for the elderly and those with vision issues.

Lighting Your Way to Better Vision
Source: IES

As we get older, nothing is more frustrating than not being able to see as well as we used to. An eye examination and new glasses can be a big help, but proper lighting is just as critical. Older people require light levels that are three to five times higher than younger people need, due to normal age-related changes to the eyes and eye diseases....

This brochure describes some of the changes that can be made to existing lighting to make your home more comfortable and secure. Some solutions are easily accomplished, such as changing to an LED light bulb or plugging a new (LED) fixture into an electric outlet. Others require changing light fixtures or providing additional electrical boxes for new fixtures. It is recommended that you hire a qualified electrician to do the electrical work for you.

The market’s accepted number for the amount of energy spent powering streetlights is 30 percent of a municipality’s energy budget Municipalities focused on replacing incandescent light sources with LED lighting. This change from incandescent light sources with LED lighting created significant savings in energy and therefore cost savings, with a city’s lighting department budget often being in the black. TE Connectivity believes the future of street lighting is controls. With controls having the promise of further energy savings and the continued discussions of their use in smart cities, we are now seeing cities and governments creating departments and allocating budgets. But even this isn’t driving the smart city forward.
