January, 2022

Hello friends,
Here we are, closing out another year that challenged us to find the silver linings.
We watched the ups and downs, wishing for a return to ‘normal’ while also understanding that the old normal wasn’t all that healthy. Welcoming a new administration and the promises of new environmental policy and being forced to be patient as things wind through a complicated system. Relishing in the abundance from our hard working farmers, while also fearing for their safety in the midst of wildfires and the pandemic.
Seeing some of our favorite restaurants and food businesses close while eagerly watching new ones sprout up.

The people in the food system are resilient - they exude passion and love for the craft and they continue to do so despite the immense challenges they have faced. And so we, as consumers, have a duty to do the same - to love the food, to support the people, to see the joy and the hope while also keeping our eyes open to those challenges.

In that spirit, as we look forward to the new year, we recommit to our three pronged approach: working for a food system that is Good, Clean, AND Fair For All.

Here’s to a sweet 2022. Take care of yourself, and if you can, someone else.
The SFEB team

GOOD: Quality, flavorsome and healthy food with cultural relevance, available and accessible to all. This incorporates supporting efforts that cultivate food justice; equitable access; and collaborations that encourage food sovereignty.

CLEAN: Production that does not harm the environment or people. Insure that environmental justice principles are applied in the fields as farmworkers plant, pick, and harvest, and on the boats as fishers harvest and process.

FAIR: Accessible prices for consumers (co-producers) and fair conditions and pay for producers and all workers. Fight for dignity and economic justice of labor from field to fork. There should be geographical and equitable access for all communities.
