We are very excited to release a new album from one of NativeDSD’s most popular bands: Carmen Gomes Inc. “Music is about the only thing left that people don’t fight over” as Ray Charles used to say. To Carmen Gomes, this album represents a ray of light in the midst of the darkness and she hopes it can be that for you as well.

New DSD Album from Carmen Gomes Inc.

Carmen Gomes Inc.

The Carmen Gomes Inc.’s release of Don’t You Cry in 2019 was one of that year’s biggest events on NativeDSD. With Don’t You Cry going on to become a 2019 Album of the Year award winner. And their other 2 DSD Albums also frequently entering the NativeDSD Top Sellers List to this day.

Now, Carmen Gomes Inc. release their 4th album at NativeDSD: Ray!

“We quickly realized that we did not want to make a tribute album. Rather we would pay our respects to Ray by following the advice Ray gave to Willie Nelson at a recording session; “Don’t think about how anybody else does it, just do it the way that YOU feel it.” So we took the songs back to their bare essentials, tried to hear them as if they had just been written and in so doing making them our own.”

Attila Gyarfas & Gabriel Zucker

Cities and Deserts was originally some fragments of songs, written primarily in New York City, in 2018 and 2019. It became a through-composed suite of music in 2020, in the desert in New Mexico, at the height of the pandemic, and it became a record in October 2021, in Budapest.

Attila Gyárfás and Gabriel Zucker have been making music since they met in 2017 in New York. Their duo infuses sonic and rhythmic freedom into complex, maximalist compositions.

Gabriel Zucker: Piano, Synthesizer, Vocals

Qiyan

The region of Al-Andalusia experienced its golden age under the Córdoba Caliphate (929-1031), when the economy and culture flourished universally. The Córdoba Caliphate was characterized by its religious and cultural tolerance: this was true for the Jews as well as for many of the Christians who had converted to Islam. At this time, a distinct musical tradition developed in Al-Andalusia from the melodic treasures of the Qiyan trained in Medina, Baghdad, and Córdoba. It continued as an artistic form even after the abolition of slavery.

The band Qiyan draws on the incredibly rich Arab-Jewish musical output of this period and celebrates the artistic contribution of an enslaved people. Bassist Péter Ajtai created this large ensemble, and the album will be his debut as a band leader.

Péter Ajtai: Double Bass
Ákos Szelevényi (Akosh S.): Saxophone
Dániel Cseke: Saxophone
Vito Szelevényi: Trumpet
Ádám Czitrom: Guitar
Ádám Mészáros: Guitar
Áron Porteleki: Drums

Bartha/Arnedo Quartet

Lazy Lady by the Bartha/Arnedo Quartet is a Pure DSD 256 Jazz recording from Hunnia Records. It was recorded with the Hapi Analog to Digital Converter from Merging Technologies at SuperSize Recording Studios in Hungary. For their first recording on this DSD EP, they chose four delicate songs. There is more to come.

One can hear how this ensemble loves acoustic sounds and the true, elegant art of Jazz Swing music. They play original music like Guillem’s Lazy Lady, special melodies from composers like J.S. Bach, and standards from the Great American Songbook. Together, these musicians create a deep, refreshing sound.

Pol Omedes Casacuberta: Trumpet
Matyas Bartha: Piano
Oláh Zoltán: Bass
Guillem Arnedo: Drums

Arif Erdem Ocak

Arif Erdem Ocak is a Turkish percussionist, guitarist, and songwriter, who connects centuries-old Turkish melodies with modern percussion-style guitar playing. With his storytelling and melodic guitar tunes that lean into folk, he intimately unfolds personal narratives and universal topics such as (after) life, spirituality, virtue, and our common humanity. His songs, melodies, and lyrics cover a gamut of emotions. Sometimes a mellow contemplation, sometimes overwhelmingly raw or sometimes melodramatic.

Arif creates heartfelt hypnotic songs that get under your skin and takes the audience a journey of reflection, silence, and mind fullness.

Arif Erdem Ocak: Percussion, Guitar, Songwriter

Attila Gyarfas & Balint Bolcso

Tabbis is an homage to Mihály Babits, one of the most influential Hungarian poets of the first half of the 20th century. Atiila and Balint chose nine of his poems that resonated the most and used them as sources of inspiration while recording the improvisations presented on this record. The primary goal was not to find means to recreate the mood or to communicate the essence of these writings, but to treat these poems as additional influences besides the usual factors like our current state of mind, the presence of the audience or the acoustics and the lighting conditions of the room that we perform in. (…)

We were sure that the titles of the improvisations had to be connected to the titles of the poems, however, we also felt it would have been too direct of a reference to use the same words since the link between the music and the texts is rather loose and abstract. Therefore, we decided to search for anagrams in English based on the letters of the original Hungarian titles, creating a new layer of playful secondary meanings.

Attila Gyarfas: Drum Set, Gong Synth, Coron DS-7
Balint Bolcso: Electronics

Lawn Dogs

“We want to break out of the caul. It seems almost impossible. We are surrounded by rules, restrictions, visible and invisible obstacles. We're looking around. Our fellow human beings have built into the machinery and even become so, now they are the machinery. We prayed to a good God. The answer is trying the official church channels. Net is censored and the real sages are dead. You can still find two traces here and there that time has not yet won to erase, but nothing can be proven anymore. The invisible execution squad is doing a really good and thorough job.

And then the music sounds. You hear it from inside. From the depths of your soul, from your heart. And you, just feeling an irrational urge, take the instrument in your hand and play. You play off what was lurking there for a long time, and you heard this determined silence that had almost been roaring!”

- Lawn Dogs

Vincent Szabó: Guitar
Zoltán Cséry: Piano and Keyboards
Kristof Szabó: Bass Guitar
Szabolcs Varga: Drums
