Our turtle-work to date...

One of the larger efforts of The Land Between charity is the Turtle Guardians program. Why? Because the region is a final refuge in Ontario for turtles, because turtles are keystone species that buttress entire ecosystems, and because turtle take so long to replace themselves in Ontario that we need to take a lead in turning this trend around for everyone's benefit!
Preventing Harm and Saving our Oldest Relatives, the Turtles

The Land Between charity and Turtle Guardians are involved in Prevention- we save turtles from harm through installing turtle tunnels, conducting road patrols, nest protection, incubation and release, and education.

Campaign Highlights

Work to date

Turtle Tunnels

We installed our first jump out/exclusion fencing to direct turtles through existing culverts and keep them off roads...and for turtles that wander on roads, there is an easy way to simply climb the ramp and exit the road too!  If successful, this prototype will be transferred to 15 sites in 2022 and onward...
Your help can support our development and maintenance of more turtle "tunnel" projects.

Hatchling Program

We excavated and incubated 5500 turtle eggs and released the hatchlings to the habitat sites where they were found.  We became the third largest turtle hatchery in Ontario, and in an area that is a vital and final refuge for turtles. Over 95% of nests in semi-rural areas are predated by mammals that feel comfortable around humans. Our efforts to restore the balance to these areas will increase success rates by 600%.  Your support can help us grow this effort across new areas of Cottage Country.

Highway Awareness

We installed the first Highway Billboard signs in Ontario, in two key areas where turtles are killed - to raise awareness for motorists. Your support can help us extend this effort to additional roadways.

Volunteer Training

We recruited and trained over 100 new volunteers, reaching a total of 588 Turtle Guardians in Ontario, who patrol roads and monitor wetlands. Volunteers are the first line of support and help for turtles on roads, they keep track of wetland health, and they develop key relationships with municipalities and partners in our communities. Your support can help us train, and "outfit" volunteers to help turtles across Ontario.

Children's Education

We created curriculums that meet Ontario School Standards, for all elementary school grades and for a broad range of subjects, using turtles and turtle behavior to connect kids to nature, and to teach them math, sciences, art and mental health too.  Your support will allow us to kickstart the delivery of these tools to schools across Ontario.

Next Steps- Saving Grace 2022

There is much to do...

While we are continuing our work to recover bird populations, restore habitats, work with scientists and harvesters to help wolves and forest ecosystems, advance capacity for Anishinaabek cultural restoration, research species at risk, secure lake health....
In 2022 we will work to save turtles too-
Here we will extend our nest and hatchling program east across the region; we will extend our volunteer efforts south to the Carolinian zone; we will be working with 4 municipalities to identify new opportunities to implement road infrastructure that saves turtles...and we hope to tag and track our ancient elders, such as Grace, the wonderful one-eyed snapper, so that we can track where she goes and which habitats she and her kin use for their life cycles.
There is so much more to do also...we will continue research and advance education as well.
We will strive to make each Ontarian a Turtle Hero!
