HAB, Artist book bound on cords, handmade hemp/cotton paper, found wood, cord, handmade milkweed paper,  HAB - Cyanobacteria from Lake Chautauqua, linen pulp, methyl cellulose,  8.5"x11"x1", 2021.
Dear friends,

On the cusp of the new year - I hope you are safe and well!
The images are of my completed artist book (unique edition of two) HAB. For those of you unfamiliar with a Hazardous Algae Bloom, it is a toxic algal explosion of the naturally occurring Cyanobacteria that afflicts many waterways and lakes. This bloom continually impacts the local lakes in New York as well as Lake Erie and the Great Lakes (and other waters around the world). Causes for the toxic blooms have been linked to wind and water currents (therefore the directional arrow imagery), fertilizer runoff, and rising water temperatures - among other environmental factors.

The Artist Book consists of collected HAB scum that was mixed with a trace of fine linen paper pulp and methyl cellulose. This was then stenciled onto handmade paper (recycled hemp/cotton). The Cyanobacteria was collected by Dr. Wigdahl-Perry, SUNY Fredonia, from Lake Chautauqua, NY, this past September, 2021. Dr. Wigdahl-Perry also shot the accompanying video and scum image.

The book can be found on my website http://www.timothyfrerichs.com/hab.html or www.timothyfrerichs.com. The work is intended for inclusion in my upcoming exhibition at the Burchfield Penny Art Center, Buffalo, opening in April, 2022.

I wish you a safe, healthy, and wonderful new year!
Tim
