Penn Cove Gallery December Featured Artist Randy Emmons

An art student in the 50s and 60s, Randy grew up in Monterey, CA, around artists, mostly local oil painters. When he got to college there were two wonderful watercolorists whose work hooked him on the wonderful wet watercolors they made. After a break for a career in the Navy, Randy returned to watercolor on Whidbey Island.
Color and Design are the strongest elements in Randy’s pieces. To paint reality is a job for the camera. To paint an emotion, that’s the job of an artist.  Whimsy, fantasy, cartoony, all have described his work. You judge and describe it your way.

Whidbey Art Trail
Welcome to the 2021-2022 Whidbey Art Trail

The new 2021-2022 Whidbey Art Trail visit artist’s studios, galleries and sculpture parks. The Whidbey Art Trail has reopened for the 2021-2022 season and now offers an even broader variety of participants. There are 24 stops island-wide, from sculpture parks, gallery spaces and large studios, to personal art-making spaces off the beaten track.

Studio visits are encouraged and every Whidbey Art Trail member is following Covid-19 safe guidelines. Information about when studios are open and an easy-to-use map with directions are available online at whidbeyarttrail.com and in print at all participating locations and on Washington State Ferries.

All while enjoying the unsurpassed scenic beauty of Whidbey Island.
Island Consort

Island Consort as a performing entity is still on hiatus, but remains alive and well behind the scenes as a chamber music organization. I'd like to share a couple of project highlights by Island Consort members!

First of all, Consort Violinist Brian Kenney has spent part of the pandemic months chasing birds--or rather, birdsong! Says Brian,

"I have been a birdwatcher and listener for my entire adult life, and have always enjoyed the way that birdsong has found its way into lots of music, from ancient folk music to high classical and modern works of all types. Last year I started recording the songs and calls of birds that I encountered, and started doing rough notations of a few I found particularly interesting for one reason or another. From there, I would practice the part a bit, usually on violin but sometimes on piano or synthesizer, and if I liked it I recorded it. Filling out the recording with other parts generally happened in a semi-improvisational manner, trying out different textures or lines or sounds (and sometimes other birds!) or harmonies until some kind of approach seemed to work and connect with the primary song. Many of the tones found in birdsong do not have a clearly identifiable pitch, and though I do use some discretion in interpreting their 'notes', I do try and stay true to their rhythms for the most part, at least to the best of my ability. I approach this project in a light and playful manner for the most part, but part of what I am doing here is trying to explore the kinship I feel, and that I believe we all share, with birds and other animals and plants. I do know that every time I listen carefully, as a musician and as a person living on planet Earth, I learn something new and find inspiration to keep working with my own creativity."

Second of all, Island Consort Director Sheila Weidendorf has launched her own website for her musical endeavors. Peruse it here: sheilamakesmusic.com

Until next time…Enjoy this season of harvest!

Price Sculpture Forest
Known and loved local sculptor Ivan Neaigus passed away in July and his life partner Talia Marcus now has an uncertain financial future ahead. To help Talia in her next life chapter and to ensure Ivan’s legacy of work continues to be accessible for the public into the future, the Sculpture Forest is collaborating with artists and friends on a fundraiser for them. Reporter Karina Andrew of The Whidbey News-Times wrote a very nice article about the entire story in “Sculpture Installed as a Tribute to Late Artist.”
Story: https://www.whidbeynewstimes.com/.../sculpture-installed...
Fundraiser: https://gofund.me/56850b86
Talia has been an active, positive advocate and participant in the local arts, music, and theater community for many years. She could use help since her long term home has now been sold for the many heirs and her future income sources are both diminished and uncertain. All proceeds from the fundraiser go to Talia.
Ivan worked in stone, wood, and metal, as well as 2D painting and drawing. His first professional background was in clothing design before he moved to Whidbey Island decades ago and became a full time artist with many shows and commissions over the years. When his remaining personal collection needed a more certain future, Ivan’s friends and family reached out to the Sculpture Forest as an ideal location for everyone to be able to see an example of his work. Talia led us on a tour through his beautiful personal sculpture park across his home’s 5 acres and the sculpture “Sunrise / Sunset” was a clear choice for being moved into the Sculpture Forest’s Nature Nurtured loop trail for the community.
“Sunrise / Sunset” conceptually presents a rising sun on one side and a setting sun on the other, with a solar hole in the middle to see through the passage of time during the day, all surrounded by a halo of light and clouds. We were able to provide it a location where the sculpture is on a raised mound that can be visually approached from both sides and it is exactly aligned on an east/west axis.

The Sculpture Forest is open for art and nature lovers every day of the year from 8:00am until 7:00pm or sunset (whichever occurs earlier).

We offer free admission, with donations gratefully accepted.
No dogs or bikes, please.
