In 2021, the Coalition's Global Initiative for Justice, Truth and Reconciliation (GIJTR) partnered with the design lab Amplifier on an advocacy campaign to highlight the role survivors play in fostering peace. The campaign consists of over 20 images that are inspired by GIJRT's work around the globe. The image above comes from a community mural sponsored by the GIJTR in Guacoche, Colombia. Sites of Conscience:
Catalyzing Memory into
Peace and Justice Across the Globe

"The more you know of your history, the more liberated you are."
- Maya Angelou
Dear Friends,

For over twenty-two years, the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience has tapped the lessons of history to help communities reflect, heal and flourish in more inclusive and equitable ways. Whether supporting a museum to identify and amplify silenced stories of the past or equipping survivors of recent conflicts to document and share their experiences to prevent recurrence of violence, the Coalition is the world's leading advocate for memory in the service of truth and justice.

Sites of Conscience remind us that remembering is a radical act - an act of great courage, fortitude and hope.

This year, we have focused on the urgent need to counteract increasing efforts around the globe to manipulate history for political gain. Through programs that shine a bright light on our shared humanity, Sites of Conscience are creating platforms for dialogue across difference as our 300+ members in over 65 countries offer their communities accessible new avenues to share stories and solutions with each other and the world.

We are thrilled to share just a few examples of our work from 2021 with you below.

Please join us today in ensuring that we bring about an end to historical silences and false narratives - work that Sites of Conscience are carrying out near and far, with more urgency today than ever before.

Survivors
Know Best
Around the world, thousands of activists, educators, and survivors are driving the Sites of Conscience movement - ensuring that past struggles are remembered so that more peaceful, just futures can be achieved.

To support these efforts, in November 2021, our Global Initiative for Justice, Truth and Reconciliation launched an advocacy campaign with Amplifier, a nonprofit design lab that unites artists and activists to amplify the most important movements of our times. Through the vision of three extraordinary artists - Nurul, Camila Rosa, and Thomas Wimberly - the campaign offers Sites of Conscience members and partners over 20 images in six languages centered around the themes of memory, peace, and respect for survivors. The images can be used as posters, projections, buttons, stickers - anything in the name of truth, justice and reconciliation.
Indigenous Art
Front and Center
The stories and experiences of indigenous communities are among the most silenced throughout the world. To help counter this fact, the Coalition facilitated a public art project in 2021 in Oklahoma (USA) that aimed to re-center contemporary experiences and memories of Native peoples in Tulsa, Mvskoke Territory, against the backdrop of history.

In Dialogue: A Community-Centered Public Art Project Reflecting Tulsa’s Inter-Tribal Identity in Mvskoke Territory hosted three community dialogues and supported the creation of four prototypes of public art projects in Tulsa that explore the complex history and unique contributions of Native peoples in the city. 2021 Global Summit
for Inclusive Democracies
As a steady rise in extremism and nationalism continues to divide communities across the globe, the Coalition devoted its 2021 Global Summit, "Building Global Capacity for Inclusive Democracies," to equipping Sites of Conscience with new strategies to identify and counter systemic discrimination against a range of groups, including women, LGBTQ+ communities, religious minorities, and other marginalized racial and ethnic communities.

Participating from over 40 countries, 125 Sites of Conscience leaders attended the Summit, gaining new skills and building alliances that will sustain them for years to come. The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience is a global network of historic sites, museums, and memory initiatives connecting past struggles to today's movements for human rights and social justice. We help sites around the world better engage their communities through grants, networking and training.
