 Message from CSF Club President

Season's Greetings fellow silent aviators! While 2021 was still not a "normal" year, it was gratifying to see a lot more of our members flying at the field. Highlights include the addition of several new members, the superb condition of the field throughout the year including the coating and striping on the runway, and the videos shot and posted on their YouTube channels by pilots Jim "LoveRC" Carter and Mike "PencenAroundRC" Pence.

We all hope for even more of a return to the normal in the coming year. To that end, we are in the planning stages of our traditional events including an early season swap meet, an open house in June, AMA Day celebrations, "Camp and Fly" and many more combat sessions. But first, we plan to celebrate the annual Freeze Fly on New Year's Day!

Stay involved in the hobby through the winter months. I hope Santa has something RC for your stocking. Consider stretching your skills by building. Hope for some good enough weather over the winter to get out on occasion. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page and in the Group for our club updates.

A special thanks to newsletter editor, Jerry, for the production of this great newsletter.

WINTER BUILDING CHALLENGE!
As President Craig mentioned earlier, a winter building challenge has been issued to our club members. Doesn't matter what kind of a model build you undertake either. It could be a Flite Test foam board model, a balsa model from plans, a balsa kit, or a 3D printed model like the "Infinity Wing" pictured above that Craig is undertaking.  Keep us all up-to-date on your progress by sending pictures to Steve Harness for posting on our Facebook page.  We know we have some model aircraft building skills in our club just waiting to be unleashed!
Club Safety Officer Report

Hello Pilots,

First, I'd like to thank everyone for another safe year at our field. Please keep up your focus and commitment to following safe practices anytime you are at the field.

Going into 2022, I'd like to remind everyone of the following:

1) Use Lipo Safe bags when charging your batteries at home or the field. This is the best way to minimize fire and injury should a battery charge result in a fire. A lipo battery fire can be intense and can get out of hand in a hurry.

2) Always use the throttle cut feature of your transmitter to prevent unwanted motor starts. This is something you should always program into all of your models when first setting them up in your transmitter. Always use throttle cut whenever your lipo is connected to your aircraft.

3) Properly dispose of puffed or failing batteries.  A lipo recycle receptacle is clearly marked and located at the field directly next to the battery charging control station for this purpose- Please use it!

4) Don't be shy about asking someone at the field to look over the setup on your airplane - especially new models or recently repaired ones. Another set of eyes has proven invaluable in spotting problems that you may have overlooked.

5) No spinning props are ever allowed in the pit area. Wait until your plane is out of the pit area before powering up the motor. Throttle cut should always remain on (please!) until you are ready to taxi out and take off.

6) Always call out your intentions when flying. Clearly announce takeoffs, landings, and low passes.  It is good to get in the habit of announcing your intentions even if you are the only aircraft in the air at the time. Often someone is waiting to take off that you may not see.

Let's have another safe year in 2022! And importantly, let's have lots of fun!!!

EAA Young Eagles Build Project Update
By
Robert Dombeck

(Editor's Note: The Young Eagles project has been supported by CSF and led under the direction of CSF and EAA member Bob Dombeck. This was truly an inspiring project and, for those of us fortunate enough to be at the field on the day of the maiden flight, something that we will always remember. See more photos of the project and maiden flight below the article).

The EAA with its Young Eagles program collaborated with the AMA to develop the Young Eagles RC Build and Fly program. Through this program, youths are taught the basic components of aircraft and the science of aeronautics. As part of my membership in both the AMA and EAA, I was very eager to make this happen.

On April 24, our three Young Eagles, Milo, Myan and Camden started building a Sig Kadet LT 40e. Our Young Eagles built the Kadet in our chapter hangar. The program requirements included having two adults present at all times and the completion of a youth protection program and background check. The youth protection provisions required that all meetings be held in a public place.  We were also required to participate with a registered AMA club. I am very grateful to Steve Harness who agreed to be our contact person with the AMA.

I was supported by another EAA member, Brad Payne, and his father Paul Payne. We scheduled 2 hour sessions on Saturdays. As a credit to the boys and their dads, we missed very few sessions. I lost count after about 20 build sessions.

We finished the build on October 30 and on Saturday afternoon November 6, we had the maiden flight and the first training session at CSF. Two weeks later on November 20, we held another training day. Each of the boys got in three flights. By the end of the third flight, the boys were getting so good that I seldom had to rescue them on the buddy box!

This has been a fun and rewarding experience for me. I couldn't have done this without the cooperation and support of the Silent Flyers, the AMA, and the Experimental Aircraft Association. I am proud to belong to these organizations and I am looking forward to more training sessions with the boys. I hope to introduce more Young Eagles to radio control flying next year.  My heartfelt thanks to the Cincinnati Silent Flyers for your encouragement and support.

Here is a recent photo of Robert "Bob" Dombeck piloting his recently constructed Tiger Moth. When he's not working with the Young Eagles or flying his own RC aircraft at CSF, he can be found building and flying his own EAA aircraft!

Flight Training Update

With the year of 2022 now upon us, it is a good time to reflect on our recently completed training season and ponder our student training approach going forward.

This year the weather was a big factor in our ability to hold training.  About one-half of our classes were canceled due to rain or high winds. To compensate, we decided to hold training on both Monday and Wednesday evenings. Alas, this was to no avail as the weather continued to be problematic.

However, we were able to hold a few training nights quite successfully! Our instructors were able to get 4-6 training flights in each night. This meant our students had their “hands on” experiences several times over the season.

Even our club members not directly involved with hands on training came to support, provide tidbits of information, and demonstrate the wide variety of aircraft available in our hobby.

As we approach 2022’s training season, we will be soliciting new and different ideas for our program.  A few are:
  • Pairing up instructors and students.  This way, they can better keep in touch and get to the field when both are available, not just on Mondays or Wednesdays.
  • Limit the number of lessons per student to 6 or 8.  This will keep both instructor and student focused on the lessons.
  • Introduce our “Student Manual.”  This will give our students background information about the hobby and our club.    Hopefully, this will also get the students up to speed quicker on the CSF and the hobby.
  • Advertise our training program in local hobby shops before and during the training season.  This will inform potential pilots about our program and where we are located.

There are more ideas for growing and improving our training program and we encourage our members and students to send them to us!!  Just drop me an email at: harness2017@gmail.com .

Field Maintenance Update

Hi Pilots and Happy New Year!

We had another good year at CSF and accomplished all of our maintenance goals for the field which I have updated you on previously. We continue to be able to enjoy this really great facility for our hobby. Thanks to each of you for your help in keeping our field and facilities in such great condition.

Recently, we issued a "Guide to the Use of the CSF Field".  In the past, this was largely communicated by word of mouth to new members. To assure that important safety and security information was being communicated in a complete and timely manner, we issued this guide to all current CSF members and will send this out to all new CSF members in the future when they are provided their lock security codes.

We are always very appreciative of the excellent support that we get from our neighbor, Denny Wortman.  Denny does an excellent job keeping our field mowed! It has never looked better!

And I want to give a very special thanks to our club Treasurer Kevin Kreig who supports our field maintenance efforts so well by keeping all of our bills paid as we work through the season on a number of projects with our vendors.

Looking forward to another great flying season in 2022!

Jerry "Field Boss" Biscopink

For those thinking of taking up Craig's winter building challenge, the new Flite Test Flerken may be a good option to consider. Basic kit is now available on the Flite Test online store for $45.00. Could this become a competitor to the Bloody Baron in combat?

Mark Your Calendars - Future CSF Events

One topic we have heard repeatedly from our members is that they missed our club sponsored events during 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. The CSF Leadership Team met recently and agreed to plan events for 2022 and to adjust accordingly as might be required.

Here is a list of what we currently have planned as of this writing:

Jan 1- Annual Freeze Fly
April 2 - Swap Meet (Rain date April 9)
June - Open House (Date TBD)
August- AMA Day (Date TBD by AMA)
October 1- Camp & Fly (Rain date Oct. 8)

We also intend to increase the frequency of combat events in 2022 - this is being coordinated by Bryan Dooley who is currently researching how we can improve these sessions.

Several Road Trips are also under consideration including trips to:
Wright Patterson AF Museum
Troy OH Waco Museum
Toledo RC Swap Meet (replaces the annual Toledo Expo)

All of these events will be communicated again closer to the date so stay tuned as we have a busy year planned for the club.
