TEAM AOC RELEASES VIDEO OF 2021 WINS

(NY-14)As 2021 comes to a close, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her campaign have released a video recapping their work in 2021. The Congresswoman chose to keep her campaign running during a non-election year because we know for organizing to be effective, there are no off years.

In the last year, Team AOC’s virtual tutoring program, Homework Helpers, provided over 4,000 hours of free tutoring to the community, connecting students struggling with remote learning to volunteers. The program also expanded to include ESL classes for Spanish- and Bangla-speaking families, summer school tutoring, and extracurricular courses such as a cooking class centered on food justice and a college mentorship seminar.

When the NRG Energy Company proposed a fracked gas power plant in Astoria, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and her campaign mobilized over 600 volunteers to knock on 3,000 doors and make over 160,000 phone calls as part of a deep canvassing program on the Green New Deal, and to inform area residents about the toxic effects of the potential power plant. The effort, alongside community organizers and leaders, helped stop the construction of the plant.

The Congresswoman joined a 1,400 person strike led by Teamsters Local 202 at the Hunts Point Produce Market in The Bronx,  helping the union win their largest pay raise in The Bronx in over 30 years.

After a historic winter freeze in Texas, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez raised over $5M for local charity and mutual aid organizations, and joined Rep. Al Green, Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, and Rep. Sylvia Garcia in Houston to visit community members impacted by the storm and assist relief organizations on the ground.

When vaccination rates in our district lagged behind the rest of the city, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and her campaign launched an outreach campaign in four languages about vaccine safety and accessibility -- and successfully lobbied for pop-up vaccination sites in Queens and The Bronx.

After Hurricane Ida devastated parts of NY-14, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and her campaign team knocked on neighborhood doors for six straight weeks to distribute information on critical relief resources and help folks apply for FEMA assistance. She also pushed FEMA to extend the application deadline to January 4, 2022. The Congresswoman’s team also also raised awareness about the FEMA program by purchasing local newspaper ads in four languages - and radio ads in popular stations in Spanish - which included information on eligibility.

The Congresswoman continued to support the NY Taxi Workers Alliance through their two-year fight, and won a new guarantee for drivers who were victims of a predatory lending scheme around taxi medallions.

In our City Council elections, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s Courage to Change PAC organized it’s first slate of Courage to Change Pledge Candidates – 16 of whom won, including the first Muslim woman ever elected to City Council, Shahana Hanif.

At the start of the school year, Team AOC provided 800 backpacks to students, and at Thanksgiving, we distributed 170 turkeys to families in our district. The Congresswoman also raised $34,711 for local organizations doing food relief work this autumn.
