EUROGOOS HIGHLIGHTS

Merry Observing and Happy New Year!

It is a time for celebration as the new year beckons and it is also a time to look back at the EuroGOOS highlights in 2021. We would like to thank our members and broader community for their valuable and multiple contributions making this year a success for the EuroGOOS work!
APOLLONIA ON MY MIND - The memoir of former EuroGOOS director Nicholas C. Flemming

Nic Flemming’s memoir recounts the life of a pioneer in ocean science. Each chapter describes a thread that structured his work: underwater cities, submerged Ice Age caverns dripping with stalactites, the limits to ocean exploitation, ocean climate change, prehistoric settlements on the continental shelf, ocean law, and safe scientific diving. Flemming is paralysed from the chest down and has used a wheelchair for the past 52 years; one chapter assesses how he has continued to work in rough conditions and at sea, visiting 60 countries since his accident. Nic Flemming was Director of EuroGOOS from 1996 to 2001. The book is available here in several versions for purchase or for reading online free of charge.

White paper “The Mediterranean Sea We Want” defines science needs and opportunities in the Ocean Decade

This paper was released in the Ocean and Coastal Research journal as a community white paper for the Mediterranean ocean research priorities in the new decade. The paper will underpin the development of the UN Ocean Decade programme SciNMeet. Many members of the EuroGOOS community co-authored this paper which is available in open access here as well as on the scientific papers page of our website.

EuroGOOS North West Shelf Operational Oceanographic System (NOOS) Annual Meeting

The meeting took place online on 3 and 9 December. It addressed progress in modelling, the needs of observational data for calibrating and validating the model outputs, and new initiatives. The business part of the meeting discussed the NOOS strategy for the coming years and approved a new working group on offshore renewable energy.

Wrap up of COINS specific contract with EEA for Copernicus in situ coordination

The first specific contract of the COINS consortium wrapped up on 7-8 December. COINS is coordinated by the EEA within its activities in the Copernicus In-Situ Component. EuroGOOS is responsible for work packages on coastal services, Arctic data, and awareness raising, as well as for the marine component in the Copernicus information system CIS2, which links in situ data providers with the Copernicus requirements and products.

NEWS FROM THE MEMBERS

Surfing through the Ocean Explainers

If you are asked about operational oceanography and why the changes in the ocean matter - head to the Ocean Explainers! This collection of educational pages released by the Copernicus Marine Service maps out the basis of operational oceanography and explains various phenomena and threats related to our ocean. While surfing from one Explainer to the next, users can also learn about the policies to protect our ocean.
UK Consultation on Sustained Ocean Observing Priorities

NERC and NOC have opened a consultation to collect views on priorities in sustained ocean observations. The consultation will be coupled with study of documented evidence and best practice from the UK and across the international community. The consultation will open on 28 February at 11AM with an introductory webinar for which you can register via the following this link.
Call for abstracts for EGU session OS4.4 Marine Pollution, Monitoring, Modelling and Risk Mapping

This session, convened by several EuroGOOS member organization delegates, will discuss monitoring frameworks, computational tools, and emerging technologies related to tracing pollutants on local, regional and global scales, as well as the coupling with met-oceanographic products from operational oceanography products, e.g. in the Copernicus Marine Service. Abstract submission deadline is 12 January 2022 (13:00 CET).
Call for abstracts for EGU session OS2.4 Advances in understanding of Southern European Seas

This session, convened by EuroGOOS MONGOOS co-chairs and member of Coastal Working Group, is devoted to scientific advances in multidisciplinary studies in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. It will seek new approaches and methods in physical and biogeochemical observations and models (e.g. the fusion of observations and modelling products as well as downstream product development). Abstract submission deadline is 12 January 2022 (13:00 CET).

Commission investment to roll-out EU Missions in health, climate and environment

The Commission has adopted an amendment to the Horizon Europe work programme, increasing the total budget to €15.4 billion: that is an increase of €723 million compared to the original budget of €14.7 billion. This new budget includes €673.24 million dedicated to the roll-out of EU Missions, which were launched in September to tackle big challenges in health, climate, and environment by 2030.

The Ocean Race gathers data on the state of Europe’s seas – Report now available

The Ocean Race, the world’s toughest sailing race, has collected vital data about the impact that humans are making on Europe’s seas. The data has shown the Baltic Sea to have the highest levels of microplastics in Europe. The carbon dioxide levels have been found to be highest in the Mediterranean. The CO2 data was analysed by EuroSea and submitted to the Surface Ocean Carbon Dioxide Atlas (SOCAT).
Access to the Arctic Ocean on board the polar expedition ship

“Le Commandant Charcot” polar expedition icebreaker owned and operated by the French company PONANT offers to host up to four scientists to participate in their regular cruises to perform scientific projects. This call, managed by ARICE, is open until 19 January 2022, 12:00 CET.
Call for proposals: Underwater Noise in the Marine Environment

This call was launched by Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania and Spain under the framework of JPI Oceans and together with BANOS, BlueMed, NOAA, and the UN Ocean Decade. Deadline for proposals is 28 February 2022.
