Newsletter of December 2021

A lot has happened in this festive month. We succesfully streamed our technical presentation for 1,5 hours (which you can re-watch on our Youtube page). Powertrain put all their effort in pinpointing problems to be able to dyno test at Ten Kate, and we made big plans for the new year!

News

On the 8th of December, we were proud to present our technical presentation. Our goal was to inform everyone about our plans for the year and progress that has been made. We were pleased to see that so many people tuned in, and interacted with us in the live chat. This gives us energy to keep going!
During our last week of 2021, we had to make the unfortunate decision not to go testing at Ten Kate. An issue which arose last-minute made it not worth-wile. We have already made progress in solving this issue, and feel confident that we will be able to test at the beginning of 2022!
December also marked the start of a charity initiative. Walk&Dance to Fight Cancer Students is an event where we will walk 20 kilometres and try to collect as much money as possible. All the donations will go to cancer research and prevention. We are proud to be part of such a good initiative started by the students from Enschede.

A word from our Chief Chassis

Last month has been a challenging and eventful month.

First, we gave our work floor a slight facelift. Now that we are working on both the DELTA XE and its predecessor APEX RS we needed room for both of them. An additional motor lift table was arranged and now we created a new layout in which we can work on both bikes comfortably at the same time.

The next project Chassis finished this month was the Connection box. The connection box is a container in which the high voltage lines from the electromotor are connected to those leading from the Cascadia, the brain of the superbike, such that the electromotor is instructed what to do. Before, this was made out of plastic. Due to the continued confrontation with the interference within the DELTA XE it was figured that a connection box made of metal could reduce this through the principle of the Faraday cage. From the perspective of weight reduction aluminium was chosen. The limited space available lead to a complex design. The milling of this design proved to be challenging. Nonetheless, the University of Twente Hangar made it perfectly to our specifications. For more details, please refer to the technical Tuesday of 13 December.

Additionally, the decision regarding the subframe had to be made. The current subframe cannot attached properly to the main frame due to bended mounting tabs. This occurred after welding the tabs that caused a misalignment with the holes in the subframe and those on the mounting tabs. Here the challenge was to either fabricate a new subframe on the old frame, of which no accurate model is in existence, to alter the holes in the mounting tabs. The latter solution was selected. Extrapolating the current misalignment to the new subframe proved to be a challenge with no guarantee of success.

Another highlight of this month was the technical presentation where we were given the stage to show what we as Electric Superbike Twente 5.0 are hoping to achieve before the end of the summer. One of the points mentioned was racing. Since we have to traveling to circuits with our batteries and stored it safely, GelKoh provided us with a battery storage box. This battery box is very advanced which increases overall safety during storage, travelling but also when working on the battery.

A word from our Chief Powertrain

We opened the month by paying a visit to the Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart with two of the Powertrain members. The show consisted of three massive halls, all completely filled with stands of companies which are in one way or another working on powertrain technologies for electric vehicles such as: battery management systems, battery cells, all sorts of HV and LV connectors and cables, motor controllers, passive components, sensors, and entire battery systems as well.
It was really cool to see the state of the art of these technologies, and we came home with loads of inspiration and new ideas.

The rest of the month was all in the light of our test day at Ten Kate, which was supposed to take place in the week before the Christmas break. Some data acquisition tools an protocols had to be finished, and the bike had to be prepared. However, fate struck: one and a half week before the big day, charging failed. The communication between the motor and the charger failed, and initiating charging did not work. All resources of the team were put on solving the problem, but this did not succeed in time. Since the requirements of the charger are specific to our motorcycle, borrowing a charger from a different company or team was not an option.

There is however a silver lining. The source of the problem has been pinpointed, and contact with the manufacturer of the charger has been established. We expect to solve the problem in the first weeks of the new year, and have planned to go to Ten Kate by the end of January.
