Costa Rica boasts tropical rainforests, mist-shrouded cloud forests, towering volcanoes, and sun-kissed shores. This small Central American country is home to varied tropical ecosystems bursting with incredible biodiversity and tight-knit communities that prize education over military and environmental protection over profit.

Our history within Costa Rica stretches back to a time when tourism there was virtually non-existant, and though times have changed, our original motivation remains the same: finding ways travel can help to preserve Costa Rica's natural wonders.

GIS
Technology Spurs Ecotourism in Local Community
Since 2008, GISetc have worked with the community of Bahia Ballena to use mapping technology to further conservation efforts and community development. 12-year-old local Maria Paula recently gave a presentation to the International Latin American User Community of over 700 professional city planners and conservationists on how mapping trash patterns resulted in community sponsored trash cans, ultimately impacting the tourism and health of the local economy. Other recent mapping projects include the ocean floor and marine life, turtle nesting habitats, and local food sources. GISetc offer training for U.S. teachers and citizen scientists each summer.  Learn more »

Undocumented Population of Hummingbirds Discovered
Hummingbird researcher Bill Hilton Jr. just returned from Costa Rica, where in-country guide Ernesto Carman Jr. discovered a previously undocumented population of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (RTHU) nectaring in commercial fields of Chayote squash at Ujarrás, near San Jose. Bill and his volunteer crews of citizen scientists have banded, and released more than 900 RTHU on over 14 trips in the hope of encountering them in their breeding range back in North America. Limited space is still available for the February 2012 expedition to Guanacaste Province. Contact us to be the first to get details on November 2012.
