NEWSLETTER UPDATE

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to update you on when the newsletter will be released. You may have noticed there was no January issue. We have decided that going forward, the newsletter will be sent out at the beginning of each month, no later than the 4th of the month. All content submissions need to be sent to me by the end of the previous month.

Please email article submissions to
ccoh.newsletter@gmail.com and title your email "Newsletter Submissions."

Thank you!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hello CCoH!

I hope this newsletter finds you happy, healthy, and yearning to get outside for some photography.  In case you missed it, we had a great event with Jeff Miller as he provided us an outstanding critique of our ‘Disappearing Technology’ images.  Not only did he critique the photos but gave us some great post processing tips.  Well done Jeff and thank you!

I know the buzz around the club is in-person versus zoom meetings.  Up front, I cannot wait to meet all of you – in person – and chat about this art we all love so much.  The decision to not have an in-person meeting in January wasn’t easy – and in some cases – not popular however, rest assured my concern is for the collective whole of the club.  COVID is real and impacts us all.  I will be working hard behind the scenes to explore a hybrid option for future meetings, and I will keep you all apprised accordingly. Like most of you, I am eager to get back to in-person meetings.

Finally – back to our passion.  Given the weather (it’s 2 degrees outside my window as I type this), this is a great time to explore some ‘inside the house’ photography (you’d be surprised at the abstract possibilities right in your own living room); work on processing some of your older images or even work on cataloging and organizing your folders.  And – don’t forget, we have some great events on the horizon – that includes our Tuesday Critique; Gimme your best shot (February is round things) and, Before and After (March).  Until then, happy shooting!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
One of our newest members – and now CCoH President is Steve Matadobra.  Steve is a transplant to North Carolina now living in Pisgah Forest.  He grew up in Brooklyn, New York where he joined the U.S. Coast Guard.  During his 43 years of active service, he was involved counter-drug operations, migrant interdiction operations and commanded ships in the Atlantic and Pacific.  He retired in December 2020 and has now placed roots in WNC.

He is very involved in the community – he is active with the Waterfall Keepers of North Carolina; he is a member of the Transylvania Natural Resource Council and currently studying to become a Master Gardener.  His love for photography evolved early with a Canon AE-1.  He now shoots with a Nikon D850 and Nikon 7100.  He is an active birder and loves to photograph birds throughout the country.  He calls his photography genre ‘eclectic’ and will photograph just about anything although he loves to photograph ‘nature’s vignettes’ – those images at your feet that most would walk by.  He also loves shooting waterfalls and landscape images – trying to capture the calm in the chaos.  He is married to Whitney – who is a mountain bike skills instructor.  He has two children (and three grandchildren) – Steve – who is a medic and firefighter in Washington State, and Shannon – a stay-at-home mom.

Below are two of his images.

CHANGES TO 2ND TUESDAY CRITIQUE

We are implementing one change and introducing a new opportunity for the 2nd Tuesday Critique session scheduled for 1 PM, February 8th.

A zoom link will be provided on Monday, February 7th.

We are asking you to start the name of your photos with the “Rank.”  The naming convention will be:  Rank_ MyName_Title_Category.jpg.  This will facilitate auto sorting of the images by Rank for the Critique session.

We are introducing a “side-by-side” feature.   Each month we will provide you with a small number of photographs and encourage you to edit one or two of them and submit them as part of the six images you are allowed.  We will then display them in a side-by-side format showing the original and your changes.

BEFORE AND AFTER

Hello Club Members,

Since 2017, the Camera Club of Hendersonville (“CCoH”) has been having an annual  “Before and After” program. The last few years have been hampered by COVID and live meeting issues. This year, 2022, we will be holding the program COVID or not; live meeting or not.  This is an exercise of POST-PROCESSING and individual vision. You will be required to take a B4 image (supplied to you) and process it using whatever software you use to do your post-processing no matter what you use. Typical examples might be Photoshop, TOPAZ, Affinity, ON1, etc etc etc.

Here is how it works:
  • The B4 images will be made available to members via Dropbox or other means and you will be notified when they are available for download.
  • Each member will be allowed to select and process 1 or more (max of 3) images from those available via Dropbox
  • The member will send his/her AFTER image(s) to CCoH.beforeafter@gmail.com.  Sizing and naming conventions as well as a timeline for this program will be sent to all via email.
  • At the March CCoH club meeting (3/22/22), we will display the before and after images that were submitted.  At that time each participating club member will be given an opportunity to share how they processed their chosen image(s).
More details will be sent out shortly.  The draft timeline of events is as follows:
  1. The BEFORE images will be available no later than 2/5/2022.
  2. The AFTER images will be due back no later than 3/5/2022.  That should allow ample time for the members to create their after vision.
  3. At the 3/22/22 meeting, we will display the results.
This program is usually a fun activity.  We encourage all to participate.

JANUARY BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

A new communication will be coming in each Newsletter which includes decisions and highlights from the Board Meeting. The Board meets (via Zoom) the second Tuesday of the month. We cover an array of topics for the club, but lately, our time has been consumed with how and when do we go back to a normal meeting schedule. Zoom certainly has filled a void and has allowed us to stay connected. However, one of the major benefits of our Photography Club is meeting and talking in person about photography, processing, great places to shoot – and whatever happens to fall out of our mouths! Let’s all hope that a return to normal is coming very soon.

Here are some additional topics we discussed in the January meeting:
  • There is a new naming convention for the Tuesday Critique photo submissions. It’s on the Website and our moderator, Ward Seguin discussed it at the January General Meeting.
  • Financial: We have a working balance of $1922. Treasurer, Nancy Pierson, is now collecting dues for 2022. Renewal is $40.00 – no increase.
Lois Van Reese, Club Secretary
OPEN POSITION SEEKING A VOLUNTEER

Field Trip Coordinator:  This position coordinates field trips with the Club calendar.  Changes were made last year that any club member can make a field trip proposal and submit it to the coordinator.  The coordinator is not the host of the field trip; rather the club member who submits the proposal.  The proposal process and the field trip suggestion forms are out on the website.  Please consider being the go-to person for this.  Since Covid has forced the club to hold meetings virtually, field trips are one of the only ways to gather in small, safe groups to share our love of photography.

For a complete job description, please contact Lois Van Reese.
OF POSSIBLE INTEREST

From Werner Bonitz:

I thought that the following info for the SE Center for Photography in Greenville would be interesting to our members. They have monthly juried exhibitions, workshops, etc. My favorite is the "Second Saturday Coffee", where you can see the exhibitions, meet other photographers and shoot the breeze. Not to forget the coffee and donuts!

FEBRUARY'S SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Second Tuesday critique: Feb. 8th - via Zoom. Images due by end of day Saturday, Feb 5th.
General Meeting: Feb 22nd GMYBS theme "Round Things"
Presentation: What to Photograph When the Leaves are Gone
Speakers: Bonnie and Chris Allen, of Asheville PhotoTours, LLC
     (

Presentation Overview:

What to Photograph When the Leaves are Gone

How to stay inspired about your photography during the Winter months

There are so many reasons (excuses) we can find to not get outside with a camera during the Winter months. Many photographers let their cameras sit idle, their photographic eyes get dull, and fail to advance their skills during the Winter. As with playing a musical instrument or any creative endeavor, regular practice of your camera craft is an important element in enjoying your photography more.

In their February presentation, Bonnie & Chris will share tips and photos to help you stay inspired to get out and photograph even when the beauty of Autumn color has passed, and we’re faced with 2-3 months of cold temperatures and barren landscapes in Western North Carolina.

About Bonnie & Chris

Whether it’s leading a group or private tour for local or visiting photography hobbyists or going out on their own, Chris & Bonnie are outside for nature and landscape photography excursions at least several times per week all year round. And they share daily posts of new photos on Instagram and Facebook (@ashevillephototours on both platforms). Check out their website for more information about their passion for sharing the photography experience:
