Christmas 2021

As we near the end of 2021, dlr Libraries staff would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

All dlr libraries will be closed Friday 24 December to Monday 3 January inclusive, and will re-open as normal on Tuesday 4 January.

While our branches are closed for the Christmas break, our online services are available 24/7- you just need your library card number and PIN.

Wrap up at home and log on to our Online Services and listen to one of our podcasts, read a magazine or e-book, or maybe get started on a long overdue New Year's resolution and try a new language.

If you are out and about for some fresh air and a wintery walk, why not visit one of our 4 Scéal Trail locations across the county.

We wish you all a peaceful and safe Christmas, and we look forward to welcoming you all back to our library spaces in 2022!

ACORN Tablets

dlr Libraries recently purchased ACORN tablets for every nursing home and daycare centre in the County, and tablets will be available for lending to all library members via your local branch. Tablets are currently available for loan from Blackrock, Dalkey, Deansgrange, Dundrum and LexIcon Libraries.

The ACORN Tablet Project hopes to help
bridge the digital divide by providing age-friendly, easy-to-use technology.

The ACORN is designed with the older person in mind, and the principle behind the tablet is to provide more accessible options for those with little or no computer or smart device experience.

The home screen is clear and easy to navigate with four main options:
Calendar – to help you keep track of
appointments, birthdays or social events
Explore – this option provides access to websites and apps
Talk – allows the user to make calls and send/receive messages and emails
Camera – the tablet has a two-way camera where photographs can be stored and shared.

For more information on this lending scheme,
contact your local dlr Library.

dlr Libraries Christmas Calender for young readers!

In the lead up to Christmas 2021, dlr Libraries shared a children's book recommendation each day on social media.

Most suited to younger readers, or for anyone that loves a picture book,  you will find a glorious collection of great reads that showcase the talent, creativity and colour of the wonderful writers and illustrators on this green Isle.

While we created this online exhibition for December 2021, these books can be enjoyed and read at any time of the year, so keep the recommendations close at hand for when you want your next great picture book.

Remember that dlr Libraries also has a book set collection consisting of 1000s of books that are available to all schools and early learning centres in the County. We encourage all teachers to avail of their very own teachers' card that allows for multiple borrowing over a long loan period and make use of this wonderful service.

New Service: Reader Pens

We have a new service on offer to our members - Reader Pens. These pens read words and full lines of text aloud for independent reading. Those with dyslexia, those who have difficulty with reading or pronunciation, those learning languages or those with vision problems will find these pens extremely helpful pieces of technology.

These devices can be borrowed by any library user for a three week loan period. In Jan 2022 all eight branch libraries will have Reader Pens available for use in the library also.

To request to borrow these pens, please email libraryculture@dlrcoco.ie

Dun Laoghaire and the 1921 Treaty: Exhibition

Not to be defeated by Storm Barra, the Treaty exhibition entitled Gateway to Independence is back again in Moran Park!

This fascinating exhibition, curated by dlr Historian in Residence David Gunning, outlines how Dún Laoghaire Harbour, the ‘Gateway of Ireland’, played an important role in the road to Irish independence, serving as a departure and arrival point for the delegates who travelled to London to negotiate the foundation of the new Irish State. Take a look at some rare photos and archival documents. You can also access the exhibition here

During the festive break, why not browse through our archive of 20 exhibitions, available online. See below  for more information.
