The Whitpain Tavern
We visited this spot several times in the past and I never took the chance to highlight its offerings in a review. Located on Dekalb Pike in Blue Bell, you may have noticed their roadside sign promoting their scheduled entertainment events (usually Thursday through Sunday nights). We became frequent visitors a few years ago when the local North Penn band IV Stone staged regular appearances at the Whitpain after winning the Tavern’s “Battle of the Bands” competition pre-Covid 2020.
In operation since 1999, the Whitpain Tavern is a good spot to catch live entertainment with the convenience to dine on a variety of food offerings prior to a performance. With a larger than expected interior space when viewed from the outside, the front room is dominated by a large oval bar with two adjoining dining areas. One dining room is sunken below the bar area toward the back of the building, while an outside deck area has been fully enclosed and finished (termed “the Sunroom”), doubling as a performance area for the artists.

... the rest of Ron's column
The beer menu offers a rotating selection of a dozen craft drafts with Troegs, Yards, Sierra, Stone Brewing, Fat Heads and Sterling Pig among the brands represented. The craft beer choices are supplemented by nine steady “main market” beers, including Yuengling Lager, Guinness, Stella, and Blue Moon. Additional bottled beers, cocktails, and wine are also available. (fyi - Draft Birch Beer is also available for cravers.)
The menu has a wide selection of salads, appetizers, and several soups to start the meal, accompanied by a large variety of hot and cold handhelds and a list of entrees. No need to dwell on the typical list of all the usual tavern fare (Wings, Cheesesteak Eggrolls, Mozz Sticks, etc.), there are some dishes that are less commonly seen on tavern starter menus (Edamame, Scallops, Spinach Artichoke Dip). A wide selection of Burgers, Wraps, and handhelds (Roast Beef and Pork Sandwiches) are backed up by some entrée options, most notably Barbecue Ribs, NY Strip Steak, Filet Mignon, Ahi Tuna, Chicken Teriyaki, Salmon Teriyaki, Crabcakes, Pizza, and several Pasta/Protein combinations. Nightly specials are offered throughout the week including Wing Night Mondays, Build-A-Burger Tuesday, Prime Rib Wednesdays, Fajitas on Thursdays and Friday Fish and Chips. I am told Sunday Brunch is a worthwhile endeavor and later in the day Clambakes, a la carte Clams and all-you-can-eat Mussels and Linguine are offered.
A group of us went to the Whitpain Tavern where we sampled a starter course of crabmeat stuffed shrimp. Three Jumbo Tiger Shrimp were stuffed with a decent portion of Crab Imperial and were well prepared and earn a recommendation. On this night we sampled Soup du Jour choices of New England Clam Chowder and Sausage Scallopini, both well-seasoned and chock full of ingredients. Our dinner choices were a Chicken Cheesesteak, a Cuban Sandwich (both served with French Fries) and Open-Faced Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes. Sandwich portion sizes were adequate, though the Cuban (served on a grill pressed Ciabatta Roll) seemed to be a bit short on the Roast Pork component and was missing the mustard. The meatloaf was mildly seasoned with no surprises and topped with gravy and crispy onions and earned a spot on my reorder list.
Service was good, the beer was cold, and the food is rated good enough for a revisit. As one of the few spots offering live band entertainment, the Whitpain Tavern should be considered for a full night’s enjoyment of dining and entertainment. (Caution, some performers may project a volume that makes conversation difficult, but diners can easily avoid performance times and enjoy a good meal by visiting early.) Those less interested in the music scene can enjoy the regular menu and food specials offered during the week and as well as weekend brunch.
Open Mic on Thursdays (typically) and entertainment schedule postings on Facebook. Reservations by phone.
