BEHIND THE DOORS
by Andrew B. Pippin

One of my favorite posters is a picture composed of many different doors. Some doors are made of wood, others of steel, and some are even made of cloth.  Some doors are bright and colorful, while others are chipped and faded.  I gaze at the different doors, looking for similarities and differences, the subtle and the obvious.  Contemplating the difference in each door I find my thoughts turn to what might be revealed if those doors were opened.  What do they keep out and, just as importantly, what do they let in?  Is it a rowdy family sitting down to a Thanksgiving dinner or a quiet couple celebrating their first anniversary?  Is it a crowded ice cream parlor on a hot summer day, or a chamber of reflection used for serious and melancholy thought?

Although doors typically represent barriers, they can symbolize a transition from one place or condition to another.  Most doors are mundane, little noticed since their impact on our lives is incidental.  A closet door, garage door, or any of the dozens of other doors we encounter on our daily journey through life.  Some, like the doors of Freemasonry, are indeed transformational.  The mental, spiritual and fraternal growth to which we are exposed as we progress in our search for truth can be profound.  We pass through many different doorways in our Masonic journey whether it is the South, West, and East Gates of King Solomon's temple or the veils of the Royal Arch.  Each passage represents a lesson along our sacred journey, a journey that makes a good man better.

For me, the First Veil represents the first three degrees of Masonry.  Drawn from the darkness necessary to prepare our minds for the light of Freemasonry, we were confronted by the great light of Masonry by which our transformation is to be accomplished.  As Masons, we regulate our lives by the Holy Bible, living a virtuous life, and keeping our conduct within the bounds of propriety.  We are taught that the Master of the Lodge is entrusted with responsibilities that require him to govern and the Brethren to obey.  With each succeeding degree we know our brothers are there to support us and offer their help and guidance.  Being raised to the Degree of Master Mason will forever be the highlight of our journey, symbolized in the blue of the First Veil.

The Second Veil represents our understanding of what it means to be a Mason.  Here we learned the importance of friendship and brotherly love.  We also learned that in order to trust our brothers, we ourselves must be trustworthy.  And while many of us are content to stay at this stage of their Masonic careers, others look around to see what other paths they can follow, and what doors may be preventing them from getting where they want to be.  And just like the door we used to gain access into a Lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons, it is what is behind the door that is far more important than the door itself.  It is this love of Masonic study, and the search for Truth, which leads us to the door of the Royal Arch.  Passing through that doorway, the blue of the First Veil is blended with the red of Third Veil to form the purple of the Second Veil.

Royal Arch Masonry is the Third Veil itself.  As we continue our pursuit of truth, we are taught the importance of working together for the common good and are also encouraged to distinguish ourselves from each other.  Such contradiction is what makes Masonry so much fun, and yet so challenging, to learn.  Here we are reminded again that truth is not easy, but it requires both wisdom and knowledge, both patience and speed.  While we will never fully complete our pursuit of truth, we will eventually reach the end of our journey.

The Fourth Veil is very special.  Here you are evaluated not only on your actions taken while in the pursuit of truth, but also judged on the quality of your intent behind those actions.  Here at the entrance to the Tabernacle, it will be necessary for you to present the truth you have learned.  Here I am not talking about a full understanding of a great, universal truth – that is not possible in our fleeting lifetimes.  I am talking about a more discrete, a more personal truth.  We seek to attain that purity of life, which is emblematically represented by the white of the Fourth Veil.

I believe that the Veils are both an appropriate symbol as well as a useful allegory in our pursuit of truth.  As humans, we tend to depend on our vision to interpret the world around us.  Veils obscure our sight and motivate us to employ our other four senses.  And since most veils aren’t strong enough to prevent a determined person from breaking through them, they teach us to respect our boundaries.  If you are invited to pass through a veil, I suggest treating it like a door you’ve never gone through before.  Grasp the handle with determination, and open it deliberately.  Do not let your fears prevent your curiosity, but let the light in the doorway guide you on your way - eagerly anticipating the wonders that await you.  Hopefully it will take you closer to your own personal truth.

Life is truly full of doors, may you open many.

Notes from the Secretary

We have had a turbulent year with many difficulties to endure.

Things will get better, we do not however, know just when that will happen.

The Masonic Home is still unable to have outside visitors on campus and therefore, we are still prevented from having in-person meetings on campus.

Until those restrictions are removed, we will continue to conduct our business virtually. When we are permitted to resume, the first order of business will be to have officer’s practices to shake the rust off our ritual.

Officers, check your ritual and make sure it is the current copy. Current editions are as follows: Royal Arch, 2019 edition, Council January 2020, and Commandery 2019.

If you don’t have the current versions, Contact the Secretary/Recorder to get an up-to-date ritual. I have them on hand at the present time.

Companions,

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and that you all will have a very Merry New year.

I hope all you and your families are in good health and are prospering.

I have been told In order to appreciate the good times, you have to have had experienced some rough times.

The last two years have been a trial for many of us.  Covid causing family and friends to stay apart.  In some cases, forever. Also in some cases, fear causing people to act out of character or irrationally.  Hospitals and Retirement homes with overburdened staff doing the best they can. Political unrest and political infighting.

Reflecting on all this can lead to a state of sadness unless we also look at the positive aspects that occurred.  Vaccines that reduce the severity of Covid were developed and advanced through agencies in record time that are infamous in being cautious in authorizing new medications and procedures.  The growth of social networking that allowed us to hold meetings remotely.  People showing up with impressive skills working in the background to allow us to hold our meetings.  Even seeing people at the Zoom meetings that we haven’t seen in years due to living at a distance.

The best thing being that our companions, pull together, respect each other, and work toward a common goal of supporting each other and our communities by practicing those Masonic virtues of Philia and Agape love.

So, what about the future? What can we expect to occur?  Well, no one can accurately predict what will happen, but we can learn from our past.

While we are still working through the problems residual from the last year, things are improving.  Some areas are opening up that allow meetings even now.  A special case is that since we hold our meetings in a retirement community we come under some special regulations and have different authorities which all have to authorize gatherings.  I know the Masonic Home is working closely with those authorities.

We will, I am sure, be holding meetings in person sometime this year. Perhaps sooner than later.

This means that once we are together again, we will have to work with dedication to bring our ritual to a level we can all be proud of.

We can also take this opportunity to step up and support our chapter.

Volunteer to take on a role that you might be interested in.  Most importantly, show up and participate in our activities. Not everyone needs to be a ritualist or hold and office. We look forward to seeing YOU.

Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand!

Greetings Companions,

I wish you all a Happy and Blessed years to come.

Freemasonry is not magic.  From the moment the Master takes your hand to raise you, you are only Symbolically translated to a sublime plane of being and thinking, but this is where it begins.  You have the opportunity for a magnificent rebirth of spirit.  It can be magical, but only if you engage in the Labor of the Craft.

This month's theme is "Moving Forward".

Moving forward means not to accept the calamities of life to break you.  It means that you are willing to continue even during times of great difficulties.  It also implies that you keep fighting until the obstacles – no matter how huge – are overcome.  But moving forward also means that you do not allow external circumstances to stop you from the pursuit of your goals.

Life is not always a joyful ride.  It can treat you really bad sometimes, as we all know.  Before you even realize, it drags you away from the sunny side of life into a dark storm.  Headwind will oppose every one of your movements.  Trials and tribulations will rain down upon you like hailstones.  Setbacks and failures accompany every one of your steps.

When the going gets tough, people usually start looking for something to blame.  Admittedly, this is a relatively easy thing to do.  There will be always someone or something to blame.  For this reason, it’s always easier to play the victim in difficult situations.  But none of this will lead you anywhere.  Playing the victim will not help you to move on with your life.  All it does is to immobilize and discourage you from ever attempting to break free.

The great problem with all of this is that not moving on is not going to help you in any way, shape, and form.  For this reason, life is not about counting how often and measuring how hard it has hit you.  It’s all about finding ways to get back up again, no matter how often or how hard it hits you.  It’s about moving forward despite the greatest difficulties and obstacles.

When you’re confronted with difficulties, remind yourself that it is not so important what happens to you.  Be aware that it is far more important how you think about what happened and how you react to it.  It’s about making the choice to gather all the strength and courage that is left deep within you in order to get back up on your feet.

When we move, we open our minds to what could be.  We explore, we think boldly about the next big thing.  We create for a better future.

With that said, looking forward to the brighter side of what we are going thru now and getting back to our rituals.

Final though, always remember that the virus is still lurking out there, please stay safe and be healthy.

If I can be of any assistance to any of you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Knights Templar - Inspections

Sir Knights,

Commanderies are regularly inspected on the condition of their records, having the necessary paraphernalia to perform ritual work, and knightly courtesies.

Since the very beginning of the Commandery Inspection, this activity continues to bring Sir Knights together for fellowship and encourages dedication to Templary.

This simple sign above, and in the monthly newsletter calendar, is to remind you, at least on the 14th of the month, to review your piece of the Commandery Inspection that is coming up.

New Year Day!
January 1st

Did you know...

In Greece, a gold or silver coin is baked into a cake, called a vasilopita. The person who receives the piece of cake with the coin inside is said to have luck the rest of the year.
In Spain they eat twelve grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve to bring 12 months of happiness.
While in Bolivia, families often hang small homemade dolls outside their homes for good luck.
In Japan, at midnight on New Year’s Eve, bells and gongs sound to banish bad spirits.
To leave the old year behind and welcome in the new one, the Dutch make bonfires in the street using Christmas trees.
Portuguese children go from home to home and sing songs for neighbors. They may receive sweets and coins in return.

Harlem Globetrotters Day!
January 7th

Did you know...

Still playing today, the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team was founded by Abe Saperstein in 1926.
They were initially known as the Savoy Big Five, after the famous Savoy Ballroom in Chicago, where they held their first performances.
The original team members were all African-Americans from the south side of Chicago, and they didn’t play in Harlem until four decades after the team’s formation.
The team embodies qualities of human persistence and creativity. Founded when professional basketball was exclusively for white players, they decided to take basketball to another level, infusing comedy and entertainment.
Over the decades, they’ve won over 27,000 games! Harlem Globetrotters Day is a day to honor and remember the achievement of this great basketball team and all other teams worldwide.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
January 17th

Did you know...
On January 17, 2022, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday will mark the 27th anniversary of the National Day of Service.
This day was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, and to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
National Peanut Butter Day!
January 27th

Did you know...
National Peanut Butter Day is a day to celebrate America’s favorite nut butter.
The annual observance has its roots in the 1890s when Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, an American physician, and health care reformer, created peanut butter for patients at his Battle Creek Sanitarium because he believed that it could help prevent both constipation and obesity.
