Community Resources

Welcome students to the Spring 2022 Semester, and to the Counselors’ Corner with Cyndy and Lucio! In each LGBTQIA+ Equity Newsletter, you will find a Counselors’ Corner section where the LGBTQIA+ counselors, Cyndy and Lucio, share a tip and spotlight a resource. In this newsletter, we will highlight the importance of setting intentions and re-introduce ourselves. We are excited and ready to support you!

With the start of the new semester, we encourage you to set intentions for the Spring semester (and beyond). Intentions are helpful as they allow you to reflect on the past, but also allow you to develop short- and long-term goals in life, academic, and/or personal areas. The University of New Mexico's The Power of Intention offers examples and questions to ask yourself as you develop your intentions. You can set your intentions through a vision board, journaling, meditating, and other ways that feel right to you.

Journaling

Journaling can be a fascinating way to let out all your ideas and intentions in writing. This writing process can support folx to reduce stress, allow brainstorming, express emotions, and more! There is one study that mentions that journaling can also support your immune system. Journaling seems a great way to explore new goals but also support your mental and physical health.

Meditation

According to the website Very well mind, meditation encourages a state of awareness and focused attention. This peaceful and calm technique allows folx to ground themselves and allow them to think, feel, and visualize goals. Meditation can be practiced to intentionally think of goals for different areas of your life. This technique can be practiced at home, in nature, or in a place that brings you joy and peace.

Vision Board

If you are someone who likes arts and crafts, or someone who is interested in art, vision boards are a great way to identify goals as you visualize them. A vision board is a collage of images or words (taken from magazines, newspapers, print outs, and/or personal drawings) that captures your goals that you want to manifest (Psychology Today). The mission of vision boards is for you to connect with your values, intentions, priorities, and overall goals you want to achieve.

The beauty of vision boards is that you can put them in your room, office, living room, or a place you spend time and be reminded of the goals you want to manifest as you see them. This is a great activity to do by yourself or with people you feel comfortable with.
