Housing services to return into Haringey Council after residents back the change

Housing services in the borough – currently managed by Homes for Haringey – will be brought back under the direct management of the council after residents backed the move.

The council’s cabinet approved the change on 7 December, after an eight-week consultation with residents which saw 81 per cent of them welcoming the new arrangements.

Integrating the two organisations will streamline and strengthen governance and accountability to meet changes in legislation, as well providing a more efficient and joined-up service. Bringing Housing Demand services back in-house will enable closer alignment with the council’s social care and housing-related support services.

Equans donates Christmas gifts to children on estates

Equans has raised an early Christmas cheer for some of the youngest residents in Haringey this festive season. The contractor has donated £3,000 to purchase Christmas gifts for underprivileged children in council homes managed by Homes for Haringey. Some of the gifts will go to children centres.

The money was raised by staff at Equans (the new name for ENGIE) and their supply chain who work on major works projects for Homes for Haringey.

We also received donations from Amber Construction and Sainsbury's Hornsey. The food/toiletries will be allocated to those who require food parcels from our FoodBox.
Toys will be distributed to our residents' families who are in need.

Update on our repairs service

Covid has had a large impact on services in many organisations over the past 18 months, and our repairs service is no different. Previously, when the Government brought in the tightest covid restrictions, we reduced the repairs service to residents, running an emergency service. This meant that less urgent repairs were put on hold and created a backlog, which we are still working through.

At the current time, we are still providing our normal repairs service - albeit with a backlog - and continue to prioritise emergency repairs. We have robust risk assessments in place to keep both residents and our staff safe. However, we are experiencing higher levels of staff sickness than normal which might result in repairs taking longer than normal.

How to help us with your repairs:
  • If you or any of your household have tested positive for covid or have been instructed to isolate, unless the repair is an immediate health and safety risk, we will not complete the repair until you have the all-clear.
  • When our staff are working in your home, please open windows in the rooms they will be working in, keep a minimum of 2 metres distance and, if possible, stay in a different room as them for a prolonged period of time.
  • You can find videos and guidance on some minor repairs you could do on our website.
We appreciate your ongoing patience with the impact that covid is having on the delivery of the repairs service and will do everything we can to ensure that your repair is completed safely and in a timely fashion.

Homes for Haringey are national award finalists

Homes for Haringey has been announced as finalists in the national Housing Digital Innovation awards, in the ‘Best Technology Partner’ category.

We were shortlisted for our work with Home Connections to provide online training for homeless people looking for private rented accommodation. The winners will be announced at the award ceremony in February.

Homes for Haringey works in partnership with Home Connections to provide an online property portal, allowing tenants to bid on suitable social homes should they wish to move.

Tottenham Hotspur donates to Project 2020

Tottenham Hotspur and our youth engagement project, Project 2020, made Christmas come early for some lucky young people in Northumberland Park last week.

Spurs kindly donated some festive gifts and Father Christmas made an appearance to hand them out. All young people left with a hot meal and snacks to take away.

Nine young people received special recognition awards for their outstanding contributions at Project 2020 during the year.

The Project 2020 youth sessions for 2021 have now ended and will start again on Tuesday 11 January 2022. We will be kicking off the year with Create 20X20, our music project for young people aged 10-19 years old.

For more info about Project 2020 and how to get involved in the youth sessions, please visit our Project 2020 pages on our website.

Boost your immunity for the festive season

With the rise of the new Omicron variant and increasing numbers of cases in Haringey and across London, it’s never been more important to make sure you are fully protected against covid.

All adults are now eligible to book a covid booster dose. The booster helps give you longer-term protection against getting seriously ill from covid. Book online or go to a walk-in vaccination site.

You can book a vaccination appointment online or by calling 119 free of charge. Thank you for playing your part to Keep Haringey Safe.

Offering shelter to rough sleepers in severe weather

Haringey has a Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP), which opens during periods of severe weather, providing shelter to rough sleepers. Access to the provision is via the Outreach services, Homes for Haringey, Haringey Council or Met Police.

If you are concerned about an individual sleeping rough during severe weather, please contact StreetLink. The details you provide will be used to help them find the individual and connect them to support.

If you think the person you are concerned about is under 18 please do not contact StreetLink but instead call the police.

More information is available on the StreetLink website.

Help make Haringey safer with OWL

An app to help make neighbourhoods safer is launching in Haringey. The OWL (Online Watch Link) app is an award-winning crime-fighting platform run by the Police.

Anyone can download it for free and receive a notification as soon as a new alert is sent by their local police officers or council community safety officers.

Without any registration or login, the public can also view recent alerts, appeals and crime prevention advice sent to their local area or anywhere in their borough.

More information on how OWL works and how to get information about crime-fighting in your area, visit the OWL website
