New Year.  New Challenges.  New Opportunities?

It's a new beginning for all of us!  The past couple of years were full of challenges for many of us.  This year will probably throw some curveballs at us too.   You conquered those challenges, you can do it again!

Resilence has been defined as "resistance, recovery, or rebound of mental and physical health after a challenge." Everyone affected by pancreatic cancer has a significant challenge they are facing.  You've also had something hard you got through before this.  What was it?  Remembering times that you were resilient before can help you get through the challenges you are facing now.

It can also be good to turn challenges on their head a bit.  Try asking yourself - "What opportunity does this bring?"  While in some cases this is not an easy answer, just turning the idea over in your head brings a bit of the power back to you.  There may be a small silver lining to even a terrible challenge that you can hold on to as a way to persevere.

The Scott Eli Jackson would like to recognize all of you for your resilience, community, and HOPE as we go through these challenging times together.

If you're new - welcome to the family.  If you are not - welcome back.

We know how much control pancreatic cancer takes away. This January, watch for posts on how to bring moments of control back into your life, even while living through a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Put these tools in your toolkit and use them whenever you need them!

For example - create your OWN self-care plan during treatment and recovery.

I know - you're probably getting inundated with advice already! There are lots of well-meaning and sometimes really experienced people out there that want to help!  (There are maybe also a few pesky know-it-alls too!)   What to eat or not eat, do or not do.  Here is your permission to take in what works for you and let the rest fall away!!

Remember: we are all different, and subtle differences in diagnosis or treatment protocol mean there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Figure out what works for YOU!  To manage nausea, do you like ginger candy or meds?   Does a walk in the morning give you energy, or better in the afternoon?  Be honest!

Believe in YOU.  We do.

Measured OPTIMISM!

To start the new year on a positive note, we're sharing a few articles on recent advancements that have been made in the world of pancreatic cancer.  Research still has a LONG way to go, but these small steps are positive signs in the right direction!!

This article explains that advancements in treatment and research aim to make procedures more tolerable for the patient and drugs that extend survival rates.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network notes a significant improvement in 5-year-survival rates, from 6% in 2014 to 10% in 2021.  While this percentage is still terribly low, it represents approximately 2,400 pancreatic cancer fighters across the country that lived longer due to this research.  Every Person Counts!

This very scientific article notes, in part, reviews findings from a POLO trial and notes that "median progression-free survival was observably longer in the olaparib group than in the placebo group."  There is still work to be done, but this is a new and exciting field of medicine that will hopefully benefit pancreatic cancer patients in the near future.

Thank You
