HAPPY NEW YEAR!

And what a year it’s been here at the Blue Earth County Library System. Even as the pandemic continues to pose difficulties and cause heartache for our community, we've been uplifted by the goodwill and gratitude of our patrons—and so we want to share our gratitude, in turn, with you. We were able to accomplish so much in 2021, from offering virtual book club meetings and poetry readings to expanding our books-by-mail service, from continuing to develop and diversify our collection to forging partnerships with other wonderful organizations in our area. We even won an Achievement Award from the Association of Minnesota Counties for the successful innovations of our 2021 “Trails & Tales” Summer Reading Program! We have a wealth of exciting things in the works for 2022—just check out the events detailed in this newsletter, for kids and adults alike—and we can’t wait to share news of all the fun and learning to come with you. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the recommendations and information below, and we thank you for being part of our library community.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Introduction to Spoken Word
Saturday, January 15 at 1pm
Blue Earth County Library Auditorium

Work with Compas Teaching Artist Frank Sentwali to create and perform spoken word poems using poetry, history, oral presentation, improvisation, and memorization! Examine the influences of pop culture and media; learn to identify and analyze the value of art versus the value of entertainment. This event is open to participants ages nine and up.

Teddy Roosevelt, the Strenuous Life
Saturday, January 22 at 10:30am
Blue Earth County Library Auditorium

Watch living history speaker and educator Adam Lindquist bring the 26th President to life at the library! Adam's portrayal of Teddy Roosevelt earned him national reenactment titles in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and he is the only person to ever receive a perfect score in the competition’s 37-year history. This event is open to history and entertainment lovers of all ages.

Blue Earth County Library Book Club
Tuesday, January 25 at 6pm (online!)

Join us for a very special edition of the BECL Book Club! Instead of discussing a shared title this month, each attendee will be given time to tell the group about a book they've read recently. If you're new to the book club, this would be a great time to dive in—make it one of your New Year's Resolutions! This will be a virtual meeting, so visit our website for the Zoom link and information to join.

And stay tuned for more great events to come in the months ahead, including an event on Saturday, February 12 with Dr. Henry Morris, Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion at Minnesota State University, and the return of our popular Maker Monday series just in time for Valentine's Day on Monday, February 14. It's a date!
Many of our events are made possible due to support from the Minnesota State Arts Board's Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund, for which we're grateful.

FUN FOR LITTLE ONES

Early Literacy Storytime
Bring your little ones to storytime on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30am! We'll read, write, talk, sing, rhyme, craft, and play with special (sometimes furry!) guests, practicing early literacy skills along the way.

Storytime: Lake Crystal Edition!
Saturday, January 8 at 10am
Join us in Lake Crystal on the second Saturday of each month! This month, we'll celebrate our favorite farm animals, so get ready to moo and oink and neigh along!
Mandarin Storytime
Saturday, January 29 at 10:30am
We're so excited that Mandarin storytime is back! Join us to read stories, nursery rhymes, and poetry—entirely in Mandarin! All are welcome to join in the learning and fun.

Reading Challenge: 1000 Books Before Kindergarten
“1000 Books Before Kindergarten” is a challenge for little ones and their caregivers with a simple concept and priceless rewards. Families can participate through Beanstack, a website that allows users to track their reading, share reviews, and collect badges—then collect prizes! Visit the library or our website to sign up.
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous | Ocean Vuong | Brittany's Pick

A letter from a son to a mother who cannot read, unearthing a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serving as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds, and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are.

The Undocumented Americans | Karla Cornejo Villavicencio | Brittany's Pick

One of the first undocumented immigrants to graduate from Harvard reveals the hidden lives of her fellow undocumented Americans in this deeply personal and groundbreaking portrait of a nation. In her incandescent, relentlessly probing voice, Karla Cornejo Villavicencio combines sensitive reporting and powerful personal narratives to bring to light remarkable stories of resilience, madness, and death. Through these stories we come to understand what it truly means to be a stray. An expendable. A hero. An American.

On Consolation | Michael Ignatieff | Nonfiction

Timely and profound philosophical meditations on how great figures in history, literature, music, and art searched for solace while facing tragedies and crises, from the internationally renowned historian of ideas and Booker Prize finalist. Recreating the moments when great figures found the courage to confront their fate and the determination to continue unafraid, On Consolation takes those stories into the present, movingly contending that we can revive these traditions of consolation to meet the anguish and uncertainties of our precarious twenty-first century.

The Fortune Men | Nadifa Mohamed | Fiction

In Cardiff, Wales in 1952, a young Somali sailor is accused of a crime he did not commit. At first, Mahmood believes he can ignore the fingers pointing his way; he may be a gambler and a petty thief, but he is no murderer. He is a father of three, secure in his innocence and his belief in British justice. But as the trial draws closer, his prospect for freedom dwindles. Under the shadow of the hangman’s noose, Mahmood begins to realize that even the truth may not be enough to save him. A haunting tale of miscarried justice, this book offers a chilling look at the dark corners of our humanity.
