On Tuesday, December 21, 2021, teams at the Research Technical Assistance Center (RTAC) and Makerere University-ResilientAfrica Network (RAN) held the 4th RTAC-RAN Webinar on the role of African HEIs development in the face of COVID-19. This Webinar was aimed at bringing together all the RTAC partners/stakeholders including United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Missions, specifically, researchers from different Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to learn, relearn and unlearn guided by the Webinar Topic.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Uganda is partnering with USAID/LAB/Centre for Development Research (CDR) to leverage the expertise of Ugandan universities and researchers to undertake development research that will inform subsequent interventions by USAID/Uganda to strengthen the voices of Uganda’s indigenous peoples. By working with the local universities, the Mission seeks to encourage sustainable partnerships with local universities and other partners positioned to institutionalize research and build local ownership and capacity around these issues.

On Friday, July 16, 2021, teams at the Research Technical Assistance Center (RTAC) and Makerere University-ResilientAfrica Network (RAN) held the RTAC-RAN Webinar 3 under the theme: Implementing Development Research in Africa: A Case of ResilientAfrica Network (RAN) Southern Africa Resilience Innovation Lab (SARILab).
This Webinar covered topics related to the processes for implementing Development Research, writing for development, challenges and good practices implementing Development Research in low resource settings as well as available opportunities. These gave highly academic faculty and researchers a perspective on how to translate science into products that are usable by development practitioners.

Whitten & Roy Partnership (WRP) Training in Senegal

With funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Whitten and Roy Partnership (WRP), an international sales consultancy, planned and conducted a 5-day, face-to-face training event in Dakar, Senegal, from April 12th to 16th, 2021 as part of the Leadership for Solar Workforce Development program. The aim of this program is to train senior leaders from solar companies in West Africa to build vibrant sales teams that lead to company growth, increased employment opportunities, and more access to modern, clean, and affordable electricity for homes in sub-Saharan Africa. The training was conducted in French and led by three WRP trainers; Davide Castorina, Jerome Freytag, and Pie-Pacifique Kabalira-Uwase.

Centres4Her: A New Way For Victims and Survivors of Gender-based Violence to Access Services

Ayoung student was groped and raped at night in her home in Uganda in 2017. Too ashamed to leave her house and face her neighbors who knew about the assault, she stayed in her home for several weeks until her friends took her to a hospital. There she discovered that she had contracted HIV and was pregnant. The young student had a smartphone and several mobile applications yet was unsure, like many other victims of gender-based violence (GBV), of where to go for assistance and which providers offer free services.

DataFest Kampala 2021 at the RAN Lab

On Friday April 30th, April 2021, Makerere University School of Public Health-ResilientAfrica Network (RAN) partnered with Pollicy Uganda to execute activities of the DataFest Kampala 2021. This engagement was guided by the Theme “Living with Data”. Together with RAN, DataFest Kampala 2021 activities were executed in collaboration with the Code for Science and Society, British Council, the Digital Human Rights Lab, Defend Defenders, Code for Africa, among other partners.

Enhancing the journey of self-reliance in basic education at Kityerera sub county Mayuge district
|

Basic education is key to the development of a child and the nation. In Uganda, the Eastern region is one of the areas where communities have not had a positive embrace of basic education for their children. RAN with support from USAID, identified Mayuge district as one of the districts that had poor performance in basic education. The Mayuge District Local Government especially the District Education Office recommended that the initial support should be given to Kityerera sub-county.

Digital Human Rights Lab Innovation Challenge for Safe bangle

On 27th February 2021, Digital Human Rights Lab – a program that seeks to integrate digital innovations to advance Human Rights in Uganda hosted the first edition of its Innovation program at Design Hub Bugolobi, Kampala. The event was characterized by keynote speeches from the Human Rights Defender Organisations like Uganda Law Society, which was represented by Counsel Pheona Nabasa Wall, the President. This was followed by pitch presentations from different digital human rights innovations.

On Wednesday, January 27th, 2021, the RAN team joined partners from the Research Technical Assistance Center (RTAC) and other RTAC and RAN partners in a Webinar. The Webinar Theme was: The Contribution of Higher Education Institutions to Development and Building Resilience in Africa-A Case of ResilientAfrica Network (RAN). This was yet another successful engagement giving us an opportunity to share RAN’s work since inception.
