Wishing You the Best for the Festive Season!

Whether you prefer 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Holidays', we hope that the holidays bring prosperity, health and happiness for you and yours!

Just reminding you that 2021 isn't quite over yet. We are open every day until Sunday, January 9.

So, why not book a High Tea in Chisolm's Restaurant! Our rustic high tea is a tempting 3-tier tower of sweet treats, scones with jam and cream, trimmed sandwiches and savouries. Sip a soothing tea or coffee, or indulge in a glass of sparkling wine. What a delightful way to while away a lazy summer afternoon, with a good friend or two!

We are still taking bookings for Chisolm's lunch, Chisolm's dinner and accommodation. It's such a treat to unwind over leisurely lunch or dinner at historic Chisolm's Restaurant. See our lunch menu and our dinner menu. And after dinner (and a drink or 2), it's so nice to simply stroll upstairs to your guestroom in heritage-listed Caves House! That's what holidays are all about!

As for cave tours, we still have a very limited number of tickets - but you need to get online very quickly and pre-book, if you want to experience the wonder of the underworld in the next couple of weeks. After January 9, we will return to weekend opening.

Remember - whether you are coming for a stay, a meal or a cave tour, pre-booking is absolutely mandatory!

Jenolan's Christmases in the Old Days

What do you usually do on Christmas Day? How do you think your great-grandparents might have answered that question?  These days, because we all lead extremely busy lives, convenience is king. An increasing number of Aussies want to get together with loved ones, to savour delicious wine and memorable Christmas feast - where someone else does all the work.

We've gone back through old newspapers to the world of 1900 to 1950, and discovered the different ways that Christmas Day was handled in the old days of Jenolan. In fact, in 1902 it turns out that most visitors liked to camp at Jenolan for Christmas, behind Caves House (which was very small in those days). But unfortunately, so many Christmas campers, with tents, horses and sulkies, raced to pack into the campground, that there wasn't even enough room for a bull-ant to squeeze in. It was chaos!

1919 - The Most Impossible Couple

December 1, 1919 was a huge occasion, when Jenolan rolled out the red carpet for Governor and Lady Davidson and Sir George and Lady Fuller.

The word 'Welcome' was emblazoned on the hillside, and there was a bugle salute on their arrival. They were escorted through caves, dined at Jenolan House and stayed overnight. They were entertained by The Cheero Girls who were quite well known back then. All the guests were on their very best behaviour.

But while researching the visit, we were fascinated to discover that Governor and Lady Davidson were utterly loathed by England's Prince of Wales (the one who abdicated after becoming King Edward VIII). He called them 'the most impossible couple'.
