January, 2022
Ramah, New Mexico
Dear <<First Name>>,
On Christmas Eve, we had a good snowstorm. Five inches of wet, heavy snow – though it's hard to tell exactly how much snow, since it seemed to compress as it fell, and a little rain followed it. Even so, the snow made for a festive Christmas the next day. Intermittent snow between Christmas and New Year's kept the world looking fresh and lovely. But now that is all past, and we are in 2022. What will this new year bring? I wonder.
One thing it will certainly bring is my new book! A couple of days ago, I received my advance copy of Beautiful Landscape Painting Outdoors: Mastering Plein Air, and I am delighted to say that it's everything I expected. I can't wait for this to be sent out to all of you who pre-ordered copies. (Books should be shipped March 1st or thereabouts.) By the way, to help promote the book, I've embarked on a new project — a series of interviews with some of the artists. These interviews are 20-30 minutes long, and you can see them on my YouTube channel. I've put together a playlist with the videos, which you can access via this link, and I will be adding more as time goes by.
Also, if you haven't ordered your copy of the book yet, it is available through both Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Bring it to a workshop or a retreat, and I will happily autograph it!
What else is coming up for me in the New Year? As many of you've noted, I've taken a break from making large oil paintings and have been focusing on small gouache studies. Well, I'm going back to oil now. I plan to begin a new series of large paintings, both made in the studio and out, which will expand on some of the terrain I've encountered during the past two years. These will be “deep” paintings — let's leave it at that for now.
Also, I am looking forward to a few more workshops and retreats than last year. Sadly, we had to cancel our oft-rescheduled Scotland retreat because of ongoing issues with overseas travel and the unpredictability of the virus. However, I'm still planning on the Canadian border being open for our summertime stay on Campobello Island, which means more events in Maine. I'm excited to get out again and paint with you all.
