SPOTLIGHT ON...
Sashimi & Sushi Platter / Kevin Letrinko

Koi Sushi Bar (Skippack)

Nestled up the hill and tucked in the woods behind Lirio Salon and Skippack Pizza, at 4044 W Skippack Pike is a sushi spot you would never even know existed unless you or someone you know has been there before... The structure of Koi Sushi Bar looks like a traditional Japanese house or "Minka", and you need to walk an elevated ramp/boardwalk to the front door, which makes the experience that much more intriguing.

Koi has its own parking lot with plenty of space (if of course you can navigate your way to it)... Turn in on your right just past Hotel Fiesole (coming from the Northwest direction on Skippack Pike / 73), or on your left just past Lirio Salon (coming from the Southeast direction). Make your way to the back portion of the lower lot, where you will see a bridge seemingly leading to no where, which will open up to your view of Koi Sushi Bar (if you happen to go in the evening, it is beautifully illuminated with string lights) nestled up on the hill to your left, and the lot not far past it.

The menu, although not expansive by most sushi restaurants standards, was well-versed and offered generous portions of everything ordered. Items ranging from Mini Tacos, and Tartare Cocktail on the appetizer menu, to tapas like Asian Loaded Fries, a Corn Skillet, and even Agedashi Tofu for the vegan/vegetarian diner, the starters were interesting and delicious. A well-balanced mix of traditional and non-traditional soup and salad options were also present to begin your experience, to be followed by your choice of main courses consisting of sushi rolls, sashimi, noodle and rice platters, as well as cooked skewer options. Everything we had was SO GOOD, any sort of sampler platter or mix of all of the aforementioned would be our suggestion for the "first-timer".

The service and dining experience was extremely pleasant (we suggest asking your server how you might be able to mix-and-match menu items to customize things for yourself should you be interested in doing so). As for drinks, they offer a full bar, as well as a pretty good assortment of Japanese beers, and Saki options for the 'traditionalist'.

QUICK BITES
The Tavern at Valley Forge to close its doors

According to staff social media posts, The Tavern at Valley Forge on Trooper Road will be closing its doors once and for all after normal operations on New Year's Day. Although there is no mention via The Tavern's official website, or Facebook page, we were able to confirm through a phone call on Thursday night. We've read employees were given four days notice earlier this week that as of this coming Saturday, January 1st, they would no longer have jobs... If you have the time between now and Saturday, stop on in to support your favorite server or bartender one last time!

Our Daily Bagel in Conshy nearing grand opening

Hidden behind window covering now, Our Daily Bagel, located in the former Fayette Street Grille space (308 Fayette Street, Conshohocken), is nearly ready to open, according to their Facebook page.

Two good friends, former teachers, and now co-owners of Our Daily Bagel, Alysa Yakeley and Marielle Link are extremely excited about this endeavor. In addition to bagels, a recent article highlighting the new spot talked about muffins, coffee cakes, bagel sandwiches and a really good self service coffee area by Rival Brothers Coffee out of Philadelphia. We are looking forward to stopping in once doors open in 2022, but as always if you make it there before we do, shoot us a message and let us know what you thought at amoveablefeastmontco@gmail.com.

Philly dining, Covid protocols and requirements

Will Philly diners brave another winter of outdoor dining? That is the question... An article in philly.eater.com says even with impending proof of vaccination restrictions for indoor dining, many Philly diners say they’re still happy eating outside — even as the temperatures drop.

We've all likely experienced for ourselves in one way or another as local eateries had to shift their accommodations for outdoor dining options in late 2020 simply for their businesses to survive as the weather grew cold. From tents to heat lamps, fire pits, and industrial outdoor heating units... We applaud the effort put forth by these restaurants to make the outdoor dining experience as enjoyable as humanly possible amidst the pandemic and Covid restrictions.
