Last week my family and I went to the spot where we typically purchase our annual Christmas tree. Our tradition is to get the teenagers in the car, blast holiday music and arrive at the festive outdoor holiday boutique where fragrant Fraser Firs of all sizes are lined up, candy canes are given out, friendly dogs are on leashes and holiday cheer is abundant.

As we pulled into the parking lot we realized our beloved holiday spot was GONE. CLOSED. We were crushed. So, we settled for a dry, smaller, mediocre tree from a local hardware store-it’s the good enough tree this year.

The Holiday curve balls seem to be coming from many angles. Can you relate? So many of us continue to manage real, heavy Pandemic related stressors. It’s a lot.

But here is the thing. It’s true what they say:
“When you are cracked wide open, that’s when the light gets in.”

What if this year we decided to focus on letting some light in during the holidays, in moments? What if we set our intention to have a good enough holiday, and let our over-the-top expectations go? Can we focus on the people, spirit, light, and energy of the season, and not the rest of the “stuff”?

Here are 4 Holiday Hacks I want to share with you that help me get through this joyous, stressful, beautiful and busy season:

Holiday Music

A solid holiday playlist is a MUST. My top three Holidays songs are: All I want for Christmas, Santa Baby and Mele Kalikimaka  (Click this image  for a Hawaiian Holiday delight)

Don't do all the cooking

Seriously, assign items for guests to bring, purchase pre-made food, and delegate to other family members. Also, consider a new tradition. For us, it’s going to be Christmas Eve dinner at a restaurant.

Prioritize "me time"

Disappear and steal ample moments of “me time”. Go for a walk, run a soft errand, watch a movie, disappear to your bedroom for a “call to a friend”, or a nap.  Catching your own breath and seeking calm spaces is restorative.

Seek Light and Hope in whatever form works for you and your family. Whether it’s placing a star and lights on your tree, attending a nativity Christmas service, lighting the Menorah for Hanukkah, or celebrating Kwanzaa, themes of gathering in light and hope are universal this season

Here’s to the good enough holidays with our perfectly imperfect families, mediocre trees, and partially complete to-do lists.

I send each of you light and hope this holiday season!
