Dear Friends,
The Hashimah family from Jerusalem’s Old City are facing a double tragedy. Umm Basem, pictured below with her son Amir, passed away a week ago. Amir and his siblings lost a mother, and their children lost a grandmother. Just days after her passing, the grieving family received a letter expressing the sender’s condolences along with an eviction order for the entire Hashimah family.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated story coming from Jerusalem.
Threats of eviction or home demolition are an everyday reality for entire Palestinian communities.
Just yesterday, settlers with a police escort fenced off land in Sheikh Jarrah that the Salaam family, a family of 11, lives on. Earlier this week they were handed an eviction notice by two key settler activists and Jerusalem City Council members, Deputy Mayor Aryeh King and Jonathan Yosef, who claim to have purchased the land from heirs of Jewish owners pre-1948.
As of December 29, the Selaam family can be forcibly evicted from their home where they have lived for over 70 years.
The Salaam family is just one of 70 families in Sheikh Jarrah who face displacement via eviction by settler groups aided and abetted by state bodies.
