A NEWSLETTER FOR OUR PARTNERS

January 2022

Adding concrete overlays to your "mix of fixes"

Many agencies have improved the overall condition of their roadway networks over time via the strategic use of concrete overlays. Under the FHWA's EDC-6 initiative, the CP Tech Center has recently released new resources designed for agencies considering introducing concrete overlays into their “mix of fixes."
These resources include two technical summaries—Concrete Overlays: The Value Proposition, describing concrete overlays' excellent performance history and low lifetime costs, and Concrete Overlays: A Proven Technology, which includes a technical overview, guidance on effective deployment, lessons learned, an annotated list of resources, and 11 wide-ranging case studies.
It is because concrete overlays are not one-size-fits-all that they have such a record of success in improving network conditions. An additional series of one-page flyers recently published by the CP Tech Center shows how concrete overlay solutions can be targeted to fit treatment to a wide range of existing pavement conditions.

Changes in AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design
for concrete pavements

The AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design software based on the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) is a comprehensive pavement design solution used by many state DOTs.
The Pavement ME Design software has continued to be modified and improved over time to incorporate new research and an enhanced quality of data inputs. A recent synthesis report summarizing changes to the software impacting concrete pavement design has been authored by Georgene Geary (GGfGA Engineering, LLC/formerly Georgia DOT) via funding from the Technology Transfer Concrete Consortium (TTCC) Transportation Pooled Fund (TPF) that is led by the CP Tech Center.

Check out this synthesis report to gain a better knowledge of the Pavement ME Design software, changes across the different software versions, and planned future changes.

Meet the board members

Matt Horsfield worked summers during high school and college for his family's concrete paving, earthwork, and underground piping business, Horsfield Construction, Inc. (HCI). While pursuing a BS in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame, Horsfield served following California's 1994 Northridge earthquake as research assistant on a project investigating how seismic impacts can trigger the failure of parking structures.
Horsfield joined HCI full-time in 1997 as estimator and project manager. Working his way through the ranks to become chief operating officer, Horsfield ultimately took over HCI as president and CEO in 2008. The company has since invested in a comprehensive equipment update including new pavers, stringless technology, and a state-of-the-art materials lab. Under Horsfield's leadership, HCI has grown 600% through expansion of its construction services and advance into ready mix concrete and aggregate materials.

Because Horsfield shares the CP Tech Center's passion for quality concrete paving, his involvement on our Executive Board of Directors is valued.
