We are ALL Volunteers!
By John McNeill
St. Francis Yacht Club Staff Commodore
ICOYC Past President and Communications Committee Chair

Every fee-paying member of a yacht club is a volunteer simply because the fees in clubs are to some degree dedicated to the support of the sport and the facility and activities that enable that sport. However, there are those who excel at volunteering well beyond the mere fee-payment, and they are the HEART of the club, driving the engine that makes it possible for a most complex organization to fulfill its mission in an extraordinary range of actions all at once.

In this issue of the ICOYC Currents we are celebrating those contributions ‘beyond the norm’ that club members make for the benefit of all. As you surely know, member volunteers can be found in nearly every activity and function of a club, whether on the water or in the house, and they are often supported and kept somewhat on course by professional staff, resulting in a significant level of teamwork. That teamwork results in a club’s frenetic schedule of events and activities that would daunt most commercial enterprises. The club functions concurrently as a sport center, event producer, social hall, restaurant (or often two), bar and even health spa.

Member volunteers, however, bring much more than their labors and skills to the cause. They are a critical element in developing the character of all those functions as their participation magically infuses the ‘member feeling’ into every function adding to the enjoyment of all members. That most important factor assures the club is a treasured ‘home’ to members, a place “Where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came.”

All that is critically important to the vitality and success of the club, so we have also covered some great ‘Insights’ on managing volunteer networks from fellow clubs, which should stir your own thoughts as to how your club might benefit. Volunteers create and initiate things too, and you ARE a volunteer!

Oh, by the way, your volunteer support of the Council is sincerely appreciated! Whether simply contributing to discussions, or stepping up to serve in all the various committee roles, you do make a significant difference in the mutual successes we enjoy as members!

Happy Holidays!
