The YSEE Supports Projects for Our Schools
Committee Chair Terry Graham
In 2021, YSEE (Yellow Springs Endowment for Education) grants funded a range of projects—geometry & art, outdoor exploration & Project-Based Learning (PBL) of the natural world, and a new track at McKinney Middle School and YS High School.
Construction, Transformation, and Symmetry was a long-term project conducted by geometry students at YSHS and correlated tightly with Ohio Standards of Mathematical Practice, while simultaneously encouraging them to create specific details in unique pieces of art.
The projects followed Van Hiele’s model of visualization, analysis, and informal deduction using the progression that is key for understanding geometry, according to YSHS math teacher, Dee Holly.
The funds were used to supply 65 students with kits for the geometry project. Each kit contained instructions and supplies, which included a bow compass, a protractor, card stock paper, a pack of colored pencils, drawing pencils, a pencil sharpener, a glue stick and clasp envelopes.
The Big Map Out! (Pt. 2) continued the work of The Big Map Out! (Pt. 1),allowing for teacher and student flexibility with the shift to in-person learning. Held at Community Solutions' Agraria, students were guided to create maps of personal outdoor space, in which they studied soil, water impacts, plants, insects, and mammals.
The Fearless Campaign and Outdoor Facilities Capital Campaign helped fund an all-weather track and running surface, field event equipment and venues for the YS Schools track.
When considering grant proposals, the YSEE committee considers the following criteria:
- What are the educational benefits?
- Will this program/project encourage excellence, creativity, and diversity in education?
- Will this grant enhance the existing curriculum standards?
- What are the educational objectives?
- How will student/project success be measured?
Not only teachers and staff can apply for grants from the YSEE Endowment, but students can, too, with teacher or staff assistance! Do you know a student who has an idea? Encourage them to discuss with a teacher or staff member
The committee looks forward to reading the grant application!
