“I don't think I would have got through pandemic lockdown if it weren't for Hugo House… It's been a real lifeline during these most unusual of times.”
-Heather, Hugo House student
As we approach a new year of creative opportunities with hope and enthusiasm, we also want to reflect on what we’ve accomplished in 2021, in partnership with the community.
Thanks to donations and support from our community, we’ve been able to:
  • Award almost $30,000 in scholarships to youth and adult students
  • Offer sliding scale payment options for teens enrolling in our Scribes summer camps
  • Run 45 sessions of the free Quarantine/Community Write-Ins, which served over 1,400 people
  • Run eight sessions of our free Ask a Speaker Lunchtime Series, reaching over 200 people.
  • Continue our partnership with the Seattle Public Library, offering 24 free virtual write-in sessions for over 400 students
  • In addition, the writers-in-residence have offered over 45 free consultations with the literary community, connecting about how to write a poem, how to submit for publication, and much more.
  • We ran over 400 classes this year, with 13 of which were 100% free and almost 1,000 spots offered.
  • We served over 500 students throughout our youth programming for teens and kids, more than we’ve ever seen before.
With you as a partner in this crucial time, we can bring quality writing programs to teens and adults who are finding that art is the best way to express our longings, our fears, our joys, and our triumphs.

“My classes at Hugo House enabled me to continue teaching creative writing classes during the lockdown and beyond; to connect with writers from across the country, forging creative community well beyond my local region; and to engage in professional development around anti-racist teaching approaches as well as best practices in a virtual environment.”
