According to the 90.5 WESA article, “the law requires the maps to honor key principles: To the greatest extent possible, districts must have similar populations, be drawn as compactly as possible, not to needlessly split up neighborhoods and other communities, and to seek ‘to best provide racial balance’ on the board.’” The commission has drafted three working versions of the map, which can be viewed on its website. A vote will likely be made at the third hearing on Jan. 3. (90.5 WESA) 🚨Pittsburgh City Council advanced a bill that would restrain police from making minor traffic stops. Incoming Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey supports the bill, saying that “much of the research suggests that many of these minor traffic stops can and do turn deadly for our citizens, especially our Black and Brown citizens, and they don’t necessarily lead to a safe outcome for our citizens or law enforcement.” The bill received only one no vote from Councilor Anthony Coghill. (90.5 WESA) 📣 Pittsburgh will get answers regarding the death of Jim Rogers before Mayor Bill Peduto leaves office in three weeks. The investigation into the death of Rogers, — who died after being tased by Pittsburgh police on Oct. 13, is near completion. The Allegheny County Police Department was tasked with investigating the incident and confirmed that it turned over its findings to the district attorney’s office. (TribLIVE) 🚍 Transportation advocates want to see Gainey take action on transit in his first 100 days as mayor. The Pittsburgh Port Authority has sought input from riders, people with disabilities, older adults, planning professionals, and community groups to create the Pittsburgh 100 Days Transit Platform, which identifies 18 policy changes that would improve people’s access to transit in Pittsburgh. (90.5 WESA) | 4 things to make you smile😂 The Funhouse Mirror Comedy Show at Mr. Smalls in Millvale is Pittsburgh’s newest monthly series for local standup comics. The recurring event hopes to highlight the wide array of talents and comedy styles practicing their craft in the city. It was launched in November by veteran comic Zach Funk, who will be hosting a show tomorrow, Dec. 18 with Cassi Bruno, Teresa Robers, and Harry Gilliland. (90.5 WESA) 📚 Former WTAE-TV reporter Kelly Brennen Culver just released a book about her daughter’s rare and life-threatening autoimmune disease. “Caroline’s Infusion Day “ takes readers through a day at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Infusion Center as Caroline, who just turned 4, receives treatment for juvenile dermatomyositis.
