Wales DTP Buddy Scheme

Thank you to everyone who registered their interest in joining the Wales DTP Buddy Scheme. There was a fantastic response, with all pathways represented! We are busy sorting participants in to groups and aim to have them ready early in the New Year.  We will be in touch via email once the groups have been allocated.

Applying for a Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Wales DTP recently opened its call for ESRC funded Postdoctoral Fellowships to commence in October 2022. Join us for a live one-hour session on 10 January, aimed at helping you to decide whether a Fellowship is right for you, and how to go about applying. In the session, Wales DTP Director, Professor John Harrington, will outline the benefits of a Fellowship and how to apply. You will also hear from and have an opportunity to put questions to current and former Wales DTP Postdoctoral Fellows, who will share their own experience of a Fellowship and how it has helped to further their career. ESRC funded Postdoctoral Fellowship opportunities are open to applicants who have completed their PhD at a research organization that is part of a DTP. Full information regarding eligibility is available on the Wales DTP website .

Register for this free one hour session by 5 January. Live talks will be recorded and made available after the event.

Next Steps and new COVID-19 variable added to CLOSER Discovery

Researchers can now search and explore over 18,000 new variables added to CLOSER Discovery – the UK’s most detailed, free-to-use search engine for longitudinal population studies. The platform enables users, including students and early career researchers, to find and assess longitudinal data that could be suitable for their research projects.  Over 9,000 variables from Next Steps, a nationally representative study which follows the lives of around 16,000 people in England born in 1989-1990 has been included in the update. This means that, for the first time, researchers can explore the complete set of variable metadata from all sweeps of the study. To mark this milestone, in CLOSER’s latest blog, Dr Morag Henderson (Next Steps PI) introduces the study and its research potential.  Over 5,000 new variables from both the Understanding Society and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children COVID-19 surveys have also been included in this latest update. Read more on the CLOSER website.

Wales DTP Student Rep for Cardiff Metropolitan University

We are pleased to announce the recent appointment of Megan James (Sport and Exercise Science) as Wales DTP Student Rep for Cardiff Metropolitan University.  Megan will work alongside current Reps Aimee Morse (University of Gloucestershire), Rachel Phillips and Tracey Rosell (Cardiff University), and Rosie Watts (Swansea University), acting as a conduit for comments and ideas from ESRC funded students across the academic schools and pathways in their home institution.

If you would like to be considered for the role of Student Rep for Aberystwyth University or Bangor University, submit your statement of interest to the Wales DTP, along with the names of two fellow ESRC students who support your nomination.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Wales DTP student Rosie Moore (Social Work and Social Care, Cardiff University) on her recent successful application for a Wales Centre for Public Policy internship.  Rosie's three-month internship will commence in January 2022, on a project examining suicide prevention policy.
