Welcome 2022
I don't set resolutions and still have not picked my  one word for the year. Instead I am focused on monthly habits and steps to make them happen. One new habit I have started is the prayer of St. Francis to start my day, cut out sugar for the month (this is very hard at STH with all the Eagle treats) and scheduling dates with my children and hubby.   After reading Atomic Habits this past December, I know it is little things that change direction. Check it out and I would love to hear what new habits you plan to try this month.

For the month of January, the counseling team will be focused on goal setting for the spring and reflecting on the fall semester in Naviance, Class of 2022  college decisions and searching for scholarships and scheduling  courses with the Class of 2023-2025.  Be on the look out for the weekly emails  to keep on all things happening at STH and how you can support your son no matter what the grade level.  Together!

Senioritis: This is not the time to slack off. Colleges will see your final transcript this summer, and they do have the right to rescind (i.e., take back) their offer of admission if your spring grades drop significantly (gulp).

Admitted student events: If possible, attend in-person and virtual events for admitted students to get your questions answered and help inform your decision-making process.

Scholarships: Search for possible fits based on your academic interests, gender, religion, and more.
Check your applicant portals and emails: If you miss a request for more information or an additional document, it could jeopardize your admission chances, so check regularly.

What to do if you’re deferred or waitlisted: Review your application and determine whether you want to write a letter of continued interest. And if you’re confused about the purpose of a waitlist, read this blog post by an admission director.

Senior College Acceptance Announcements:
Have you seen our highlights on social media about YOU and YOUR CLASS?! Make sure you are letting your counselor know when you are admitted to a college so that you can be featured too!

Senior Scholarships:
As you are awarded scholarships, please make sure that you are updating your counselor or kristine.meier@sths.org.  All of your scholarships are celebrated in our graduation program.

Do you have a Going Merry  account set up?  They are a great resource.  Our team also keeps a list that we update regularly here.

Remember! Our SAT/ACT School Day registration deadline is this Monday, January 10 by noon. Use this link to register.

Juniors attended the Course Selection presentation today during flex to learn about selecting classes for their SENIOR year!

Once you have scheduled your Scheduling meeting, here are your next steps before we meet:
  1. Review the course catalog with your family to learn more about the courses available to you
  2. Complete the course wishlist found here and bring it to your meeting
  3. Make note of any questions you or your family have and bring them to your meeting as well
Upcoming Junior Workshops
  • Wed., January 12: Resumes during F block lunch study hall
  • Wed., January 19: Activities Section during F block lunch study hall

  • PSAT Scores & Khan Academy : This month, 10th graders will attend a workshop to understand how to view PSAT scores and sync their scores with Khan Academy. Khan provides targeted test prep for each student, so it's a great idea to devote 30 minutes a week to build up your test taking skills. Counselors will also review your score results invididually with you during your course selection meeting.

    1. Go to satpractice.org. Create an account on Khan Academy or sign in to your existing account
    2. When prompted, agree to link your Khan Academy and College Board accounts.
    3. Send your scores.

  • New Year = Time to Update your Resume: If you haven't already done so, log into your Naviance account and spruce it up with activities, honors and other additions from first semester.
  • Identify a summer program: Browse through options for day programs, residential programs, and online options that match an interest you might like to pursue. It's hard to believe, but summer is just around the corner!

Choices Corner
In my previous life, I spent 20 years working on project implementations. One thing that was always part of the project plan, but rarely used effectively, was a lessons learned/look back session. Essentially, once the project was over, so were we and off to another project. Unfortunately, many of the missteps we made previously would show up again on the next project. Luckily, after several missteps, we learned that we would include a lessons learned/best practices event at the start of our projects. So, as we kick off the new semester, I thought it would be a good time to revisit two key points of a lessons learned session.

Capturing Successes

“Lessons learned” tends to refer to improvements that need to be made on a team. But it’s just as important to capture the successes throughout a semester—and not just to celebrate. These successes can identify best practices to apply to future classes and assignments and can be shared across future endeavors. Specifically, we might even learn how to successfully utilize our Study Hall hours!

It’s also helpful to record (yes, write them down) successes that should be carried through to the next semester. Whether that was a short-term change, a commitment to an existing St. Thomas process, communication (with our parents/teachers/LEC) tweaks, or something else, it’s worth documenting this to realize what can and should be carried on in the future.

Improvements Needed

Recording the reasons behind academic improvements or issues is also important to documenting our semester lessons learned. Identifying an academic issue isn’t enough—understanding where the issue originated and the impact it had gives more context to the issue and helps set up recommendations for improvements moving forward. This is why I suggest reviewing academic improvements by breaking down the ProblemImpact, and Recommendation.

Although, this seems formal, it can be as simple as just having a conversation. For most of us parents, our  recommendation is to “plan your week and study more effectively.” However, remember that this is a collaboration and when our sons arrive at the answer themselves, they feel more empowered to implement a plan fully. Thus, my biggest recommendation, is to simply ask them, “how might you go about doing this differently?” Then, be OK with the silence. For us parents, this is typically a struggle. I know how difficult (and frustrating) it can be to sit back and let our sons arrive at the answer on their time, but I would highly encourage you give them a little space and see what they come up with. Also, if they answer with a generic “study more,” simply say, “and how might that look for this upcoming week – specifically, what would Monday look like if you were to study more?”

This is easier said than done, but hopefully it just offers something to think about as we kick off the new year.

I look forward to a great semester!
