The Black Bonspiel is set in the fictional, rural town of Wildrose, Alberta in the mid-1930s.

Wullie MacCrimmon, like a good Scot, lives to curl. He and his rink are so good that he attracts the attention of the Devil herself, who makes Wullie an offer hard to resist: He will win the Brier -- if on his death, he will curl on the Devil’s team in hell.

Wullie makes the deal -- but with the proviso that he will save his soul if his Wild Rose rink can beat the Devil in a challenge match. And so, Wullie’s rink takes on the Devil's crew of Guy Fawkes, Judas Iscariot and Macbeth in the most crucial curling match of all time, a matter of after-life and death.

This is a funny, old-fashioned story, firmly set in the Canadian prairies, as you'd expect from W. O. Mitchell. You might even call it a sweeping saga.

Cast announced for When the Wind Blows

SOAP is pleased to announce the cast for their upcoming spring performances of When the Wind Blows, by Raymond Briggs. In addition to the scheduled performances at Venables Theatre April 22-30, 2022, When the Wind Blows will be SOAP Theatre's entry in the 2022 Okanagan Zone Theatre Festival, to be held in Oliver May 20-28, 2022.

Richard Kendrick will play the role of JAMES BLOGGS, a retired country gentleman, naively following govern-mental brochures on how to prepare for a pending nuclear strike in the height of the Cold War. He has a steadfast trust in government and will follow the advice of the ‘powers that be’ regardless of how absurd that advice may sound.

Margi Chantler will portray HILDA BLOGGS, who like Jim is sentimental about the good old days of World War II. Hilda is a bit of a prude and in contrast to Jim’s interest in reading the daily paper, she doesn’t really pay attention to what is going on in the outside world. Rather than panic about the threat of a nuclear strike, she is more worried about burning her cake.
