Dear <<First Name>>,

Tis the season for reflection and celebration. In this spirit, I have some exciting news to share with you.

In 2018, our project set out with the goal of creating tools that would strengthen our region's ability to protect, restore, and steward the ecological and human values associated with Átl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound's ocean and freshwater.

Over the past three years, I have had the immense privilege to work in partnership with you to accomplish this goal. We have created a map that visualizes over 700 data layers about Átl'ka7tsem's ocean, created new knowledge about marine creatures and aquatic values, and (my personal favourite) spent 37 days on the water documenting this region's beautiful marine life.

Looking back, I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished in such a short period of time, and grateful for your support on this journey. I have learned so much from working with you, and will never forget the immense joy, passion, and respect that resonates within Átl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound for the nature and communities that surround us.

Looking forward, our project is launching into a new phase that will focus on mobilizing and expanding upon the successful pillars of the past few years. With this transformation comes a change in our team composition. I am stepping back from the role of Project Director to focus on completing my graduate degree at UBC (fingers crossed within the next year!), and am thrilled to introduce you to our incoming Project Director - Courtney Smaha!

Courtney is an environmental champion, based in Squamish BC, who joins us from the private sector where she has worked for nearly a decade as an environmental manager. She has a deep connection with the ocean, rivers, mountains, and people that comprise the Átl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound Biosphere Region, and we are so excited for her to join our team in January 2022!

On that celebratory note, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season, and thank you again for all your support toward the project's success, evolution, and accomplishments over the past few years. We did it!

Sincerely,
Fiona Beaty

Our team is getting ready to survey the activity of slhawt’ (herring) as they spawn in Átl'ka7tsem in spring 2022, but we need your help!

Please consider donating to support this grassroots research project, led by youth from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) to document this culturally and ecologically important fish. Donations close on December 31st, so please share this opportunity throughout your networks!
