Seasons Greetings to our circus family and friends

Phew! 2021 - What a year huh? We hope everyone is doing well. It has been heartening seeing all of our various communities rising to the challenges we’ve been facing collectively. Things are still humming away in the circus world, and with the new traffic light system in effect there are still lots of opportunities for us to develop circus engagement for everyone. Read on to explore our newsletter in English and Te Reo Māori.

ANZCA UPDATE

We’re pleased to say our newly formed committee has integrated well and is making plans in exciting new areas of interest in 2022, as well as building on the amazing mahi passed on to us. There is a great sense of support for each other, even as we seek to balance out our own personal and professional lives while volunteering time to ANZCA. We’re encouraged by the feedback we’ve been getting from the circus community - so keep it coming folks :)

If you’d like an insight into our committee meetings there are minutes and notes available to members by clicking the button below.

EDUCATION

Thanks to expressions of interest and enthusiasm from the circus community, a circus in schools sub group of ANZCA has emerged with the intention to promote and develop circus in schools and curriculum integration into the primary and tertiary sector. If you are interested in being involved, share resources, or be willing to advocate for our community, we’re very keen to hear from you so please get in touch.

HISTORY

One of our committee members came across this beautiful painting in the Christchurch Art Gallery recently and we’re super-curious to know more. It is entitled Circus, Night (c. 1955) by Juliet Peter (1915-2010). Check it out! Do you have any more information or stories about this painting or Wirth’s Circus?

Looking out from her Wellington workplace window one day in December 1948, Juliet Peter saw five elephants walking slowly down the street. Seizing a pencil and sketchbook, she left the School Journal offices where she worked as an illustrator, followed the elephants and the accompanying circus entourage and drew as their giant tent was raised. She also attended a performance before the circus left three weeks later. Two of Peter’s circus-themed designs were published as School Journal covers in 1950 and she returned to her circus sketches after studying lithography in London in 1951 and 1953, creating this and a related daytime print. https://www.nfsa.gov.au/latest/wirths-circus-home-movies

EVENTS

BELLE - A new immersive work by Movement of the Human www.movementofthehuman.com/artists#/performance-of-air

Belle is a multidisciplinary work that collides 4 contemporary dancers and 4 aerialists with light architecture and sound design. Belle has been a project in development over the last 4 years, slowed down of course by Covid but this work has never been in a rush. It has just completed a 4 week development residency in Ōtautahi, Christchurch, at the Christchurch Circus Center, thanks to funding from CNZ and The Ministry of Culture and Heritage. And it is currently on track to finally premiere at the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival Of the Arts in Wellington in February 2022.

ANZCA board member, Jenny Ritchie, shapes the aerial choreography and apparatus design while Malia Johnston shapes the contemporary dance components. But together with AV designer Rowan Pierce and composer Eden Mulholland, the four of them have collaboratively designed a truly unique work. In this work, the audience is freed from the theater seat and taken into an environment where the walls melt away, light is channeled from beyond the performance space creating the effect of new dimensions, with live sound immersing the audience further into a sensory experience unique to Belle.

HAUS OF YOLO By Dust Palace

Prepare to delve deep into the inner sanctum of fashion label; “HAUS of YOLO” in an exhilarating experiment in circus and rapid-fire on-stage costuming making. Welt Couture and the Sexy Love Puppet circus artistes welcome you to enter and become part of the pseudo choreographed chaos-orgy of the YOLO sewing room. A visually stunning cabaret of fashion and art, desperately trying to mean something.

Who will get creative control? Will the costumes be complete before the act goes on? Will they stay in one piece? Welt Couture takes you to the sensuous side of fashion, balancing the dark arts and modern middle-class slavery.

MĀORI AND PASIFIKA CIRCUS

Kanohi Kitea Presentation Forum
Monday August 9th 2021 was the second day of an event called Kanohi Kitea, which means a face that is seen. This event was put on in collaboration mainly between Circability and Te Roopu Taurima. A presentation forum was held at Circability’s central headquarters, where many people from different Māori/Pasifika and Community/Social Circus organisations gave powerpoint presentations about who they are, and what they do. Among them was Dr Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal, giving a rich kōrero about Te Whare Tapere, the ancient Māori arts of entertainment and recreation. The parallels of the activities described with Circus disciplines were uncanny.

(Kai te mahi a Dr Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal tōhona whakaaturaka e pā ana ki Te Whare Tapere, i te tari matua o Circability, Tāmaki Makaurau)

For example, pouturu, poutoti, pou tokoraki, or Māori stilts, used both for entertainment and walking over difficult swamp terrain. Also a māori swing, which is a rope on top of a pole designed to swing around in circles, like a Māori aerial apparatus, pictured below:

There were also multiple group games designed to increase fitness, such as Matau, Mauī, which involves a circle of people holding sticks vertically, and moving to their companions’ stick whilst leaving their own, either left or right, hence the name.

Mū Tōrere, an ancient Māori board game based on astrology, which involves two players/teams, four pieces each on a nine-space board, and is about one player ultimately trapping the other. This could be played either in two-person board format, or with eight people in a circle, each having their spots clearly marked for quick movement.

(Wiremu Sarich demonstrating Mū Tōrere with Kahuraki Bronsson-George at Northland Circus headquarters, Whangārei)

Last but not least, the legendary poi, which were designed to increase wrist strength, flexibility and coordination. Historically they were used in group kapahaka performances, and are still to this day, and have since developed into many different forms, including a visual flow toy at Circus festivals. Original poi were made using materials sourced from the whenua, mainly harakeke, and the bags, called kii, were originally used to carry rock weights to help warriors train for war. Modern poi are made using industrial materials, and can be decorated with various colours, fabrics, designs, even programmable LED lights. All in all, the Kanohi Kitea presentation, and the workshops that followed it, have shown that ancient Māori games of Te Whare Tapere share many features with European Circus performing arts of the western world.

SPOTLIGHT

This year was an exciting year for circus youth across Aotearoa. In May we started off with New Zealand’s first-ever Youth Circus Festival in Auckland. The festival entailed a full weekend of fun Circus workshops. This was a new opportunity to mix with other youth from the community outside of our usual studios or groups. The youth show on Saturday evening was a special highlight.

On Sunday we spent the morning with a looooong discussion about how to make Circus more visible and accessible for youth. A group of enthusiastic people that wanted to create something new had formed itself. A few months after that, we had our first get-together as Circ.Us in Waipu. Another day full of circus jamming, fun and a great chance to get to know each other a little better. We decided on a name: Circ.Us. We think this name really says what circus is made of: Community. Us connecting and sharing the beautiful energy with each other makes circus the wonderful thing that it is.

However, with starting this youth group we were also faced with the challenge of finding communication and decision making methods. We now communicate using Signal as a platform and we make decisions through voting together in our meetings. We decided to meet monthly over zoom and every term in person, rotating between Whangarei/ Dargaville, Waipu, and Auckland.

TOur next focus as Circ.Us is speaking with Rachael Trotman, who is conducting research on Social Circus employment pathways for youth over the next 6 months. We are also looking forward to the Youth Circus Festival 2022 which will be held in Waipu.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Aotearoa Symposium of Circus Thinking, October 2021.

Our inaugural Symposium of Circus Thinking was an immense success! Incredible and informative speakers from all over the world were gathered into our time zone and local attendance was at 3 times what we'd anticipated and the feedback was incredible.

"... valuable information, great presenters, and well organized. I appreciate it. Also making it financially accessible was a great move towards a truly inclusive event."

"Absolutely loved this event, and it was especially great to have while in lockdown. "

This years' symposium ws organized and funded by Eve Gordon of The Dust Palace as her swansong from her six years on ANZCA's steering committee.

"I thought Eve did an excellent job organizing! I think it’s an event that could really grow in the coming years."

We'd like to thank Eve for her contribution to this event and to put the call out to anyone who would like to contribute to future symposiums!

In other somewhat shocking news, the legendary Circus OZ recently announced it will be winding up the company. “The iconic Australian company is to cease trading following the Board’s failure to secure the agreement of Company Members to a radical overhaul of existing governance structures” Arts Hub Australia:
