NIRMAN

Education · Research · Arts
Dear friends,

Our school campus in village Betawar is surrounded by the sounds of singing all night. In the North Indian months of Kartik and Margsirsa (November to January) there are rituals, temple gatherings, and community get-togethers. To hear the clear sounds for miles in the countryside air is a thrilling experience.

Life is certainly returning to normal. Bazaars are flocked and weddings are jam-packed. Whoever heard of a quiet or lonely moment in India?

In our newly re-started classes we are trying for quietness. We want children to settle down, understand their responsibilities towards themselves (to community or nation only after that), to challenge themselves, to learn to focus, to take on leadership and imaginative projects, and to complete them.

As always, in order to achieve this, we teachers have to be ahead of the game. We have to learn and practise all this ourselves. As well as be immensely thoughtful and creative about how to adapt all our wonderful local culture to curricular resources.

The biggest story from us is of this immense labour in getting back every child to learning and designing a learning that will make them life-long learners. Not for us simple literacy and numeracy. Our children are writing book reports and stories, doing research projects, designing and performing, singing and composing, and watching and making videos.

It is not easy. Everyone got accustomed to staying at home and working at their own pace. The machinery is creaky. Oiling its gears is complicated and expensive. Yet, the sound of the singing reminds us: we have to work for children, urban and rural, to fulfill their dreams. If you are looking for a worthwhile cause, do join the Friends of NIRMAN - details below.

Some of our more dramatic activities of the year:

2nd October: Gandhi Jayanti
Storytelling during festivals
Gandhi is more than a symbol
Gandhi is very close to our hearts and we do not reduce his teachings to one day of celebration. We try to practice his values everyday, particularly non-violence, and compassion for all. On Gandhi Jayanti (birthday), however, we remind ourselves of our Gandhian philosophy of working with our hands and keeping our spaces clean.
The lovely world of stories in India
We marked Krishna Janamashtami (birthday), Dassehra and Diwali through performance, creation, and play. We talked about one version of the mythological story and asked the children to find out about the others. Children did research with parents, grandparents and neighbours, and then continued their learning with arts and crafts.
14th November: Children's Day
Healthy Food Fair
A Scavenger Hunt and Picnic on Children’s Day

In the wild, jungle-like part of our village campus, we had a picnic and games in a clearing. The wilderness was just wild enough to be scary, the delicious food just civilised enough!

Interesting point to note: many children brought pasta—and it was spicy!
The Healthy Food Fair & Fete
We showcase an important plank of our philosophy: curricular integration. Children prepare and sell food that is economical, nutritious, imaginative. They combine Science (cooking), Maths (budgeting), History & Geography (knowledge about the ingredients), Language & Literature (food lore, advertising). And there is more fun in the form of games, songs, and dances!
Parents' workshops
Chinta and Sunita threshing the rice
Our strongest links, the parents
Workshops enabled us to meet up again with most parents. The ‘workshop’ part addresses one of our key philosophies; the school must team up with the family to enable a holistic education to take place for the child. We begin by simply asking each other, “Tell us about the child at home/in the school.” We proceed to raise adult consciousness about the techniques and politics of education and the changing world.
Environmental work
Our rice is harvested; our eggplant, cauliflower, and greens are coming up; our potatoes and onion will soon show their face; and our wheat is about to be sown. Quite some projects!
No less is the shoring up of the river and creek-side, and planting trenches upon trenches in Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki's technique that helps build dense, native forests quickly.
One day's eggplant harvest
Children working on the land
Even while the main champions are the staff, the children work regularly on all of it. We are learning in sequence about earth, sun, sky, fire, and water in our curriculum. The goal is “an environmental curriculum” that connects us holistically to our universe.
