Feeling a Lot Like Christmas

How We Meet for Worship

On Sundays, we meet at 10:00 in two parallel meetings -- In-person behind the Meetinghouse and on Zoom.  Children and their families are welcome to gather in the in-person meeting in one section of seats.  The children stay for the first 20 minutes and then go to the Memorial Garden for their First Day activities.  For those of us who are meeting on-line, here is the Zoom link for Sunday Worship and second hours.

On Wednesdays, Adelphi meeting convenes a midweek meeting for worship for healing - at 12:00. Here is the recurring link to these midweek meetings.

Additional connecting details --  such as phone connections -- for all meetings for worship, meetings for business and second hours appear in this attachment.

Takoma Park Friends Meeting Preparative meets in person each Sunday at 11:30 at the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church at Tulip and Maple in the library.  Then at 7:30 on Sundays, there is an online meeting for worship on Zoom. Weather permitting, some Friends gather for an in-person meeting for worship at 3:00 pm on Thursdays.  Details for these meetings (including a definition of "weather permitting") are on page 2 of this attachment.

Coming Right Up

New: Christmas Eve @ Adelphi

We will gather on Zoom for our semi-programmed Christmas Eve Meeting for Worship from 5:00 to 6:00 pm on December 24.

As darkness settles, we’ll celebrate the Christmas story with singing, readings and silence and we’ll close our worship in shared candlelight. Please prepare candles, real or virtual. We encourage younger Friends to plan and set up their family’s candle arrangement. For virtual candles, “light” a Zoom background - Melanie Gifford can offer instructions and background images. For any other questions, contact Melanie (email in Breeze).

In and Around Adelphi Meeting

New:  What's Going On @ the Meetinghouse?
Is it a dinosaur dig? A mountain to climb?  Things look a little different between the Whitehouse and the meetinghouse these days.  Many huge thanks to Joseph Ndayisenga and Ken Leonard for devising and implementing a work-around (emphasis on work - looking at you, Joseph), so that the in-person meeting and the children's meeting could still meet.

New: Changes in Silent Announcements Publication Routine

  • On December 24 and December 31, brief editions of Silent Announcements will include only the links for worship and for other weekend meeting events.
  • Beginning in January, we'll start a new practice:
    • Regular Silent Announcements will be sent out on Fridays.
    • Abbreviated Silent Announcements will be sent on Tuesdays, including only items that are new or “coming right up” postings, and worship links.

New: Friends Community School

Holiday greetings from Friends Community School are here, along with a link to a recording of the school's holiday show, presented by many FCS students.

The divine is hidden quietly inside the human.
The holy is hidden in the physical and the material.
Therefore, we have every reason to live in hope and trust and confidence.

The Work of Christmas

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:

        To find the lost,
        To heal the broken,
        To feed the hungry,
        To release the prisoner,
        To rebuild the nations,
        To bring peace among brothers,
To make music in the heart.

~ Howard Thurman - Mystic, Poet, Philosopher, Theologian

Virtual Meetings for Worship and Work and Play

Virtual Meeting for Worship each Sunday begins with singing at 9:50 and continues with worship at 10:00, followed by sharing our joys and concerns, and  announcements. Following meeting for worship, we gather in small "virtual tables" for the potluck conversations we've been missing.  Then at noon, we move to a 2nd-hour discussion, a meeting for business, or other community activity.

Join virtual Meetings for Worship (and second hours) through this recurring Zoom link.*  You can also join by phone at 301-715-8592. The meeting ID is 870 7330 7657, and the meeting passcode is 672002.  If you are not in the Washington DC area, you can find your local call-in number here.

*This link will be the same for meeting for worship every Sunday (and second hours and meetings for business and such) until May 2022.

Outdoor in-person meetings for worship will continue for now behind the meetinghouse.  Children will meet in the Memorial Garden after joining in worship for the first 20 minutes of meeting.  Click on this link for guidelines.

Our children's outdoor in-person gatherings continue on Sundays at 10 am., beginning with 20 minutes of worship with families behind the meetinghouse.  Children then go to the Memorial Garden for First Day activities. For information, please contact Rob Duncan via our "Breeze" directory.

Meetings for Healing

with a Concern for a Broken Nation

On Wednesdays at noon, Friends gather for an hour of worship to hear joys and concerns, and to hold our nation in the Light that brings peace, imagination, and open hearts.  You are welcome to join in as you are able. Here is the recurrent Zoom link.  You can also connect by phone at 301-715-8592.  Meeting ID is 895 3793 7040, and the passcode is 292353.  (This link information is always the same;  you can add it to your calendar.)

To Use the Meetinghouse or Grounds for a Small Meeting

Adelphi’s facilities are open for small indoor meetings or somewhat larger outdoor meetings.  These guidelines must be followed for usage.  To reserve a space, please contact our resident Joseph Ndayisenga at resident@adelphifriends.org.  Keep in mind that the meetinghouse is now under re-construction, and much of the space in the White House is taken up with storage for items that were in the meetinghouse.

Bible Study

Friends gather for Bible Study each Wednesday at 7:30 pm via this recurrent Zoom link.  The Meeting ID is 917 6330 4821, and the passcode is 407700.  The group uses Barclay Press's "Illuminate" series of study guides, written by Quakers for Quakers. Beginning September 8, the group will focus on Joshua, Judges, and Ruth.  For more information, contact Mackenzie Morgan via this info in Breeze.
