From our practice to your home, we wish you a happy holiday and a joyful new year!

COVID-19 and Holiday Travel 2021
While the availability of COVID vaccines has made holiday gatherings and travel safer this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended additional steps you can take to reduce your risk further.
  • Get vaccinated if eligible
  • If eligible, get a booster vaccine
  • Check the community spread in the area you plan to visit
  • Continue to wear masks in large groups, on mass transit, or other indoor areas where exposure to COVID-19 can be greater
  • If traveling by plane, try to secure direct flights versus flights with multiple stop overs
  • Pack extra masks and hand sanitizer
  • Continue to practice social distancing when possible.

Always On-Call!

If your child is sick or injured or struggling emotionally, pick up the phone and call your pediatrician.  We are working hard to make sure we can care for your child while still keeping everyone safe during the holidays. If you feel you need to call 911, trust your instincts and call.  Otherwise, it's generally a good idea to check in with your pediatrician first. In most cases, we can help over the phone or coordinate other kinds of care for your child without going to the hospital.

Remember, there's always a pediatrician on call.  If you have questions after hours, or, if your child is experiencing an illness or injury requiring an immediate attention,  you may call 404-351-6662. You will speak with an experienced pediatric nurse from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. The nurse will answer your questions and address your concerns or you may request to speak with the on-call pediatrician.  We are here for you!

If you have already booked an appointment and need to cancel it, please remember to use the cancellation link in your appointment confirmation so that we may make it available for another patient.

Schedule Now!
Go to our website at www.piedmontpediatrics.org to sign up for the COVID vaccine clinics.

Our COVID-19 vaccine clinics are:
Tuesday 12/21 and Wednesday 12/22  from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

We will also have COVID-19 vaccine clinics running on:

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
starting  12/28/2021 - 01/06/2022
Our COVID vaccine clinics will occur in our office.
Your child MUST be signed up for the clinic to receive the vaccine.  We will NOT be vaccinating any patients who have not signed up and pre-registered in advance.  Sorry for this, but there are strict documentation requirements and limits on the amount of time each vaccine vial can be opened.

Our office only has the COVID vaccine formulation for patients 5-11 years old. If your child is 12 years of age and older and you want him/her to get the vaccine, or if he/she is 16 years of age and eligible for a booster vaccine, we still recommend Viral Solutions or other local vaccine administration sites. Check out www.vaccines.gov for a list of vaccine locations near you.

’Tis the season! Sometimes the holidays can feel even busier than ever with endless to do lists, but it’s also a time for togetherness. Along with more time spent together, are more treats around the home. I feel like everyday more treats somehow make it into our home, which can be tasty and fun, but make it more difficult to maintain boundaries. Enter, Candy Cane No Bake Drop Cookies. Turn your treats into something sweet and satisfying!

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 60 minutes
Total time: 1 hour, 10 minutes
Makes: 12 cookies

INGREDIENTS
  • 8 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ⅔ cup milk (2% or whole milk)
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • ¼ tsp peppermint extract
  • 3 cup quick oats (or give regular old fashioned oats a little chop with food processor)
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • Crushed candy canes (this is a good activity for little hands to work on)

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. In a medium saucepan combine coconut oil, cocoa powder, milk, and chocolate chips.
  2. Continually stir until chocolate chips are melted and mixture starts to boil. Allow mixture to boil for 1 1/2 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and add peppermint extract.
  4. Fold in oats and chia seeds until completely mixed together and drop heaping spoonfuls onto a sheet of wax paper. Sprinkle immediately with crushed candy canes. Place in the fridge and allow to set for at least 1 hour.
  5. Store in fridge in an airtight container and enjoy!

I love this recipe because it has fat, protein, and fiber to keep tummies full, and just the right amount of sweetness to satisfy. This is also the perfect solution to all of those broken candy cane sad faces!

Per cookie:
Fat 7 grams
Fiber 3.5 grams
Sugar 6 grams
Protein 4 grams

Bonus: contains iron, calcium and zinc for growing bodies!

Wishing you all Healthy and Happy Holidays!

Breastfeeding During the Holidays?

As a new mom, you may have more errands to run, parties to host, celebrations to attend, and traveling to visit family and friends. Traditionally. you have a seasonal to-do-list you must take on. These activities may have an impact on your daily breastfeeding routines.  For example, your baby may nap longer while traveling, and sleep less at night. Family and friends are eager to hold and give bottles to your little one, leading to fewer opportunities to breastfeed.  Here are a few tips to help keep a healthy mommy and baby breastfeeding routine during the holidays:

Rest. Mothers should recognize you cannot do everything.  Breastfeeding with your new baby is a great reason to kick back, relax and limit activities. Know where you can be flexible and where you're not.
Plan extra time for travel.  While planning to travel, factor in time for breaks for breastfeeding, rest, and nutrition. Build in special family time for you and your baby.
Good Nutrition.  Holiday treats can lead to snacking on empty calories. Mom will feel her best if she has balanced meals daily.

Piedmont Pediatrics see healthy infants frequently in the office during the first years of life, giving them many opportunities to provide guidance that supports and encourages breastfeeding. The ideal time to see an infant is around the 7th-10th day of life. We are excited to offer lactation consulting services to our patients who have recently welcomed newborns into their families. These services are provided by Barbara Koval, APRN, a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist, who has been a valuable member of our team for the last 7 years in providing general pediatric care to our patients.

If you are a new mom and in need of lactation support, please don't hesitate to contact us.  You may email your request for a lactation consultation to:
