On that day, the Hamilton Coalition To Stop The War is organizing an in-person, informational picket at the corner of King and James Streets, in front of Jackson Square. Exactly one month earlier, we conducted a picket at the constituency office of Hamilton MP Filomena Tassi, Minister of Procurement.
The Canadian Parliament is due to decide to buy new fighter jets (sticker price $19b. [lifetime cost $77b.]) and new warships (sticker price $82b. [lifetime cost $286b.]) These largest procurements in Canadian history effectively mean that Canada won't be able to afford the costs to transform to a green economy, or adequately fund social programs such as medicare for the next generation, or update aging infrastructure to deal with climate change, among other issues.
During this holiday season, when there is much talk of peace on earth and goodwill to all, we note that these new weapons are NOT designed to protect the territory of Canada, but rather to carry out Canada's commitment under NATO to wage aggressive wars on other countries. Moreover, the new fighter jets and warships will burn incredible amounts of fossil fuels, making it impossible for Canada to meet its climate commitments.
It's time for a new and independent foreign policy for Canada.
