Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #532 - 21 December 2021

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to
share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

Examples include:
*Hoodlums at train stations or parks causing trouble.
*People causing trouble at shopping centres.
*Cars racing.
*Suspicious behavior
*Found property
*Abandoned vehicles.

17 December, from Ku-ring-gai command:
It is one week early but so many of our community will be on holidays already, and Christmas is just around the corner
2021 has been a challenging year for so many of us, in so many ways. The personal and corporate challenges exceed so many from in the past.
We here at Kuring Gai Police Area Command thank you for your following and support. We have endeavoured to bring to you hints and tips about crime that is occurring in your suburb. Mix this with a bit of trivia and a little humour and you have the Kuring Gai Eyewatch page. Thank you for being a part of it all.
As you prepare for the Christmas festive season, stay safe; look out for yourselves, your neighbours, and your loved ones.
A few tips for you before the holidays

17 December, from Ku-ring-gai command:
With recent break and enters and stealing from work places, if you work on or manage a building site, have a look at these building site security tips.
They may help avoid some grief over the Christmas break.
17 December, from Ku-ring-gai command: As we enter the warmer months and are out and about more often, be vigilant and look out for yourselves and your friends.
17 December, from Ku-ring-gai command: Lane Cove Road, Turramurra 1908.

16 December, from NSW Health: Changes affecting face masks and QR check-in rules
Not sure when you need to wear a mask or check-in?
If you’re over 12 years, you must still wear a face mask:
• While on public transport or in a waiting area
• While using taxis and rideshares
• At airports and on aircraft
• For indoors front-of-house hospitality staff who are not fully vaccinated
You’ll also need to continue using QR check-ins at:
• Hospitals, aged and disability care facilities
• Gyms
• Places of worship, funerals or memorial services
• Business premises for personal services (e.g. hairdressers, salons and spas)
• Pubs, small bars, registered clubs, nightclubs
• Indoor music festivals with more than 1,000 people
Wearing a mask is still strongly recommended in indoor venues and when you can’t physically distance outdoors.
Businesses may still request to see your vaccination status or ask that you wear a mask for the well-being of their staff and customers.
More info here.
15 December, from Ku-ring-gai command
Had a good time this morning speaking with local residents and shop owners in the West Pymble Shopping Centre.
Break and enters, steal from motor vehicles and stolen vehicles were all mentioned with some actually knowing a couple of the victims.
It just brings incidents like these a little closer to home.
The message today is the same as posted in previous posts. Make it as difficult for the criminals to gain access to your vehicles and homes. Keep them locked and secured at all times. Whilst this isn’t the answer in itself, it certainly goes a long way to slowing down and discouraging many of those thieving criminals.
Also consider installing good quality sensor lighting and a CCTV system. Sensor lighting lights up the darkened areas where these criminals hide while good quality CCTV system can go a long way to identifying someone – even if it is only the clothes they are wearing at the time.
Remember to report the crime or suspicious behaviour at the time or as close to the time the incident is occurring. This gives us the best chance to engage the suspects at the time and check their bona fides.
Ways of reporting to police:
“000” Triple Zero for emergency or life-threatening situations
“131444” Police Assistance Line (PAL) for non-emergencies
“1800 333 000” Crime Stoppers – to provide crime information
Hornsby Police 9476 9799
Gordon Police 9418 5399
14 December, from Ku-ring-gai command:
THREE PACS - POLAIR - FIVE ARRESTS - FIVE IN POLICE CUSTODY
The long arm of the law caught up with these...
'NOT SO FABULOUS FIVE'

18 December, from NSW Government

As restrictions start to ease, proof of vaccination is not mandatory at all venues, however, businesses retain the right to ask. This is their decision and should be respected.
18 December, from Sydney Trains

18 December, from NSW Police Force
Great news! A 17-year-old boy reported missing from Sydney's Upper North Shore has returned home and is safe and well. Police thank the community and media for their assistance.
18 December, from Crime Stoppers NSW: SOMEONE HAS STOLEN MY CAR! – Oh, wait…
This time of year brings an increase in people mistakenly reporting their cars stolen only to find that they have just parked their car elsewhere to their usual spot.
Most common mistaken stolen vehicle reports occur at Shopping Centres or around the busy streets, where their ‘usual’ spot or area is unavailable, and they park somewhere else.
Unfortunately, their time is then wasted as police must physically sight the vehicle to remove the “stolen” status before the car is able to be driven again.
There are apps which you can use to remind you where you parked your car – otherwise, use extra vigilance. This will help save yours and the police’s time.
If you car has been stolen, contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 (24/7).

From NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby: 'Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for Personal Safety'

Tip #10. NEVER LEAVE KEYS IN A HIDING SPOT OUTSIDE THE HOME. Instead leave spare keys with a trusted friend. Consider Fingerprint, Key Pad or Bio Locks.

Tip #11. NEVER ACCEPT OFFERS OF WORK FROM DOOR-TO-DOOR TRADESMEN.
Report to Travelling Conman Hotline 1300 133 408. Only use tradies recommended to you, or that you have researched. Supervise them all the time in your home.

Tip #14. WALK IN WELL-LIT REGULARLY TRAVELED WALKS AND PATHWAYS AREAS.
[Report a street light fault—Ausgrid 1800 044 808.] If followed, cross the street, crossing back and forth if necessary. If pursued, DO ANYTHING to attract attention—scream, pull a fire alarm, flag down a passing motorist, etc. Carry a personal alarm. Stay calm and in control.

Tip #17. IN A LIFT, STAND NEXT TO THE LIFT CONTROLS/EMERGENCY ALARM OR HELP BUTTON AND FACE THOSE JOINING YOU. Be prepared to exit.

Tip #18. AT AN ATM, IF YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE, CANCEL THE TRANSACTION & LEAVE. Or shout, “What do you mean, ‘no money’?!” Do not display cash in public—put it away discreetly & fast. Get $50 cash from supermarket EFTPOS (without making a purchase).

Tip #19. WHEN DRIVING, LOCK DOORS AND WINDOWS AND DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN VIEW, ESPECIALLY ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. Where possible, park rear to the curb, giving you a better view of a situation.
