Academy boys for Prem club and county.
The President's Podium at half-time.
The Vandals - our U23's - battle it out at Reeds.
Get down to the club on Tues 28/1 for our Club Day!

Our Young Men Shine

As fixtures fell across the country this weekend there was a sprinkling of Farnham Academy players playing representative rugby - and our Under 23s saw action at Reeds (see story below).

On Saturday Louie Kirkham, Oban Baird and Matt Salisbury all represented London Irish under 18’s against Gloucester. A fine 41-17 win for London Irish with Louie Kirkham captain of the side from 7.

The following day five Farnham academy players (pictured above) turned out for Hampshire and Surrey in a tight contest. Callum Jones and Jack Bemelmans ended up on the winning side as Surrey ran out 15-10 victors. Ethan Payne made his Hampshire county debut at scrum half alongside Max Williams and Jake Silvester for the Hampshire side.

Both Tobias Trafford and Joe Brockman have also represented Hampshire and Surrey respectively this season as the county Farnham Academy side gets set for 2022.

Meanwhile, the U15s Bs rounded off the year with a narrow loss at Reeds. Having lost the first half 21-0 they showed great spirit to win the second culminating in a 21-14 loss. Tries came from Joe Ridler and Zach Mould. A true age group squad with all levels represented!

The President's Podium.
While the 1st XV have not had the results we would all like this year, the players continue to turn up, do the work and bust their guts for the club.

To this end, a jury of ex-players, chaired by the President, decide which three players put in a particularly good performance in any one match, award them 3/2/1 points respectively and at the end of the season we have a player who tops the President's Podium.

The postponement of the Camberley games means the season neatly concludes its first half at the Christmas break - so what better time to publish the podium as it stands.

37 players from the senior squad have pulled on a 1st XV jersey so far this season. This strength in depth together with some very good performances and narrow defeats (if the league was determined by points difference, we would be mid-table) gives plenty of hope for a more successful 2022.
The future's bright. The future is the Vandals!
Back Row: Ollie Male, Ed, Ben Ryan, Toby Richards, Ollie Wingfield, Max Deverne, Ed Robinson (c), Johnny Redford, Ollie Kirkpatrick, Elliott Catermull, Jack Pearson, Dom Parker (Coach).
Front Row: Max Foskett, Will Mylchreest, Ben Atkins, Chris Ratcliffe, Angus Murray, Max Parker, Adam Widlake.
Our 1st XV's strength is depth is underpinned by the strength and quality of our Junior Section.  All bar two of the players in the President's Podium table above learned their trade (certainly in the formative years) as Juniors at FRUFC - plus quite a few others in the senior squad including 1st XV skipper Ollie Brown and brother Ben.

Every year, a number of Farnham lads leave home for university or careers elsewhere -  thankfully returning home for the holidays. This is where the  Farnham Vandals, the club’s U23s side, comes in!  The Vandals' mission is to sustain a love of rugby and loyalty to FRUFC among those wandering souls. The current Vandal's team is comprised mainly of Academy players from the last two year's squads seasons disrupted by the pandemic.

On the evidence of Sunday's match against Old Reedonians, all is going to plan!

After all pandemic protocols (and more) had been followed, the Vandals enjoyed the advantage of the significant slope at Reeds for the first half of the game.

The Vandals didn't bring a kicking game to exploit the slope but we did have the distribution skills of Will Mylchreest - recently returned from 3 years rugby in California - and Max Deverne, bringing Gallic flare from University in Narbonne. Both moved the ball around to eventually set up a short range drive for the forwards and a try for pack leader Chris Ratcliffe.

ORs immediately counter attacked but fearless defence from Murray and Richards, marshalled well by ex-age group captain Redford kept them out until pressure on the Farnham  22 resulted in a knock on soon after which ORs went over for a try of their own - 7-5.

The remainder of the half was all Farnham, ORs penalty count was on the increase and eventually the pressure told, a clean break by Warrior regular Ollie Male helped Deverne skip over for a simple try out wide – 7-10.

No one is quite sure what happened next! Old Reedonians came out swinging, caught our boys asleep, got the bounce of the ball and suddenly we’d conceded 4 tries in 10 minutes! 31-10. OR's crowd got livelier and the signs were ominous. Thankfully our boys had other ideas. Tackling was relentless, discipline was on point and Old Reedonians were rattled.

The referee rightly pointed out that he was a volunteer and did not appreciate how he was being spoken to by OR players and supporters alike and started taking appropriate action to deal with the dissent – 4 yellows in the 2nd half! Well done sir!

The Farnham scrum, which had been dominant all day, came to the fore and gave the backs the platform to move the ball around. Time was running out and despite a try from Captain Ed Robinson, we weren’t able to do much more. Final score – 15-31.

Well played boys.
The Club Day is on! Tuesday, 28th December.

As per the poster below, the full club is coming together to strut its stuff and have a blast of post-festivities fresh air.  The highlight for spectators is a game between the Vandals and a Farnham President's XV at 2.00pm.

To be as safe as we can, drinks and hot food will be served outdoors.

Naturally, if new restrictions are imposed beyond the current level, things will change!

See you there - and in the meantime, have a very merry Christmas.
