Welcome to TDC's Summer Newsletter 2022 with all the latest about our essential work with marginalised communities across Brighton and Hove

Our New Community Champions

At our AGM back in March we were delighted to present our new set of Community Champions with their awards. Many of them were recognised for the work they did during the lockdown stage of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Each Community Champion features in a video made to celebrate their unique contribution to their communities. You can see them all in this set of blog posts about the winners, or on this You Tube playlist.

Highlights of our AGM Community Champions Awards

Craven Vale Jubilee Party and Platinum Champion

The Craven Vale estate is winding down after their successful jubilee celebration on Saturday, June 4th. It was a fun-filled day with plenty of entertainment, smiles and good weather.

The estate has also gained a Champion in their community. Alan Cooke, chair of The Vale Community Centre, has been recognized as a Platinum Champion for his outstanding 16 year contribution as a volunteer in the area. Alan was invited to Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee concert, which was followed by a Jubilee lunch with Camilla and Charles.

Well deserved! Congratulations Alan!

Thank you to Alan, Nick, Christine, and the rest of the Craven Vale volunteers for organising another fantastic event.

Learn Around the World

Learn Around the world is a multicultural drop in that has been running on Mondays at Community base. The event offers a chance for people to practise English conversation while they connect with their community and there's also IT support, social prescribing and employability support on offer.

The drop-in wrapped up for the Summer with a visit from The new Mayor of Brighton and Hove Lizzie Dean. The project will be back in September. Watch this space.

Albion Life Funday and AGM

Albion Life held a Funday in the resurrected community rooms at the Thornsdale block in Albion Hill. The previous mayor Alan Robins was in attendance to see the results of all the hard work in bringing the space back in to use for all the in the area.

Outside was a brick-a-brac stall, recycled bikes, 'Refugees in Exile' bookstall, clay workshops and 3D pen sessions from Exploring Senses. Inside, the Early Childhood Project were busy with toys, books, and art for smaller children.

A short AGM was held with a sad goodbye and many thankyous to outgoing chair Peter Spence, who has been involved in the Community Garden and Albion Life from the start. Nu McAdam was warmly welcomed as the new chair.

For anyone in living, working or visiting the area please do visit to see what's going on with new groups and activities. The hub is on the ground floor of the Thornsdale Tower, at the bottom of Albion Hill - someone is generally around on Monday afternoons, and they can also be contacted at albionhub@gmail.com

Curiosity Club

Curiosity Club is a science club for young people that we run in Whitehawk. Recently the club participants wrote a blog post about the club to explain what they enjoy about being part of it. Read it here

“I come to the curiosity club for the nice people. It’s important to make a difference to someone’s life and to help your community”.

MY-G Radio

TDC’s Moulsecoomb Young Men’s Group, recently teamed up with Platform B, a Brighton based next generation radio station, to produce three incredible radio shows.

The flagship My G Radio Show features the whole group introducing different tracks chosen for the show. The second two shows feature two DJ duos presenting the entire hour themselves.

Working with the Albanian Community in Brighton and Hove

From our Albanian Community Development Worker Sonila Deda:

"It has been a busy year working as the Albanian community engagement worker and it has been an amazing experience. The highlight for me has to be planning and supporting the Independence day event which is a yearly event in the Albanian National calendar. The satisfaction of seeing everyone come together to celebrate, and how valued it was by the community, was the best reward."

Area Networking Update

Our networking groups for for service providers to meet one another, share information and find ways to work collaboratively have new email groups you can join to keep up to date with the session. You can join the group just for one area of the city, or keep up with all of them. There are more details on the Area Networking web page here.
