HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ALL OF US
TO ALL OF YOU
Dahoon Holly
This evergreen tree is native to Florida and can be found growing on undeveloped land in our area neighborhoods. Possessing male and female flowers on separate plants, both must be planted to ensure production of the brilliant red berries on the female tree in fall and winter. The berries serve as an excellent food source for wildlife and are a beautiful sign of the holiday season. It can be purchased at our local native plant nurseries.
As 2021 comes to a close, we count our many blessings and continue to be beyond appreciative for all of the community support and like-minded connections we’ve made so far since our efforts of local neighborhood land conservation began in February of 2020.  Not only have we saved land together, we’ve made a lot of friends in our communities! We look forward to continuing our mission in 2022 and beyond and we wish you all the best in the New Year!

The Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park was acquired by the City of North Port in 1989 with two Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program grants. The name Myakkahatchee comes from the Seminole language: "miarca" meaning "big water" and "hatchee" alluding to "river". A true “Blackwater Creek,” the water in the Creek is stained a brown color by the leaves, roots, and detritus decaying in and around it, making a transparent water that is darkly stained resembling black tea (aka tannin-stained).

The 5K run will take you through all the marked trails in the park (an actual course map is in the works, please see the trail map in the map section of our race website for your general information at this time).

We truly ARE in a race to conserve. More than 1,000 people are now moving to Florida each and every day and hundreds to thousands of acres of land are being completely cleared not just locally in our neighborhoods, but Statewide, to accommodate our growing population daily; this threatens the very being of our wildlife, endangered species, flora and trees at the same time. All of the trees and plants you will see in the park are the same as those being removed in our neighborhoods daily to make way for development. Few to none are saved or planted back.

We hope that in visiting this natural park you will be inspired to learn more about the natural environment in your neighborhood, plant back native trees and plants that once grew on your land, and continue to support our efforts to protect similar natural greenspace in our neighborhoods.

"A Day in the Life of a Pond "

January 12th at 7pm

Florida Master Naturalist
Kate Borduas

How can so many species thrive in such a limited resource as a small pond? The answer is that species have learned how to share a limited resource, and they do so in some highly creative ways involving time, space, and specialization.

Join Master Naturalist Kate Borduas as the sun rises, through the morning and afternoon until we say Goodbye to the full moon.  Our Pond Visit will include Great Blue Herons, the largest wading bird in North America, and single celled algae, the simplest of plant life on earth, and everything in between.
