RHILC Winter Walk

Christmas Walk

Our RHILC Winter Walk on Sunday 19th December took a little diversion as Sabine's idea almost got cancelled due to the Omicron COVID worries.  However a group of us went on the River Walk around 4miles.  Starting at Rivermead Nature park

  • Rivermead path to Sandford.. watch video of where this is here
  • Simons Land
  • HeyFord Meadow

Some of us then continued to Sanford Lock, crossed there and made our way back to Iffley Lock along the Towpath to make a circular river walk.

Katharine has suggested these additional walks from the Oxford Preservation Trust for anyone wanting ideas!  Do connect if you would like to lead one for us!  (we will talk about this in our next meeting too)

Litter Picking

Its always a good time to pick some litter!  With a trusty litter picker, some gloves or even just a bin bag, now is a great time to go out and pick up litter in your local parks and on your walks.  Doing litter picks as a group is fun but in these precarious times please do take the flag and go solo picking!

Project LEO

Project LEO trial

Rose Hill and Iffley Low Carbon are supporting a ground-breaking local energy trial. The Low Carbon Hub is inviting all residents of the new build flats in Rose Hill – on Carole’s Way, Ashurst Way, Desborough Crescent, and the Oval – to take part.

Solar panels on the roofs of the new flats are generating clean electricity when the sun shines. This trial is looking at how residents of the new flats can benefit from these solar panels: getting access to cheaper electricity at those times when the solar panels are generating the most energy. We hope to learn from this trial if and how residents of similar flats could benefit from cheaper, low carbon electricity from shared solar panels.

This trial is managed by Low Carbon Hub in partnership with Oxford City Council as part of Project LEO

What you can do:

If you know anyone who lives in the new flats, (or if you live in the flats yourself), encourage them to take part. If they do, they will:
  • Get £50 credit on their energy bill from Co-op Energy
  • Get six months’ free broadband internet, supplied by Phone Co-op
  • After six months they could also save money on their energy bills by using electricity at certain times – the ‘Solar Saver Offer’
  • Support a community energy project learning how to tackle climate change locally.

Upcoming drop-in session to find out more :

  • 10.00-12.30 – Saturday 5 February 2022 at Rose Hill & Iffley Low Carbon Repair Café, Rose Hill Community Centre

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a secular, evidence-based approach that helps us become more aware of what we’re experiencing, as we’re experiencing it – including our physical sensations, emotions, thoughts, and surroundings.  It helps us tune into how we’re feeling so we can make wiser choices about what to do next, encourages us to connect more deeply with others and trains us to accept our experience without piling on self-criticism or judgement.

Sally Harris is an accredited mindfulness trainer based in Oxford. Since 2017 she has been leading courses and workshops to help people boost their wellbeing, ease physical pain and reduce stress.

Trev writes "I first tried Veganuary a few years ago, and I loved the sense of connection doing it at the same time as others gave me.  Cutting down on meat is one of the main things we can do to cut our carbon footprint, be that eating vegan or veggie once a week, or something more committed, for me a challenge like this was a great way to see if I could do it and make it fun.. have a go with me for January 2022?"
