Message from the CEO

Dear subscribers and friends of SAGE,

It has been another challenging year for the higher education and research sector with COVID-19 continuing to affect our personal and professional lives.

Despite the stress and uncertainty, it has nonetheless been a rewarding year with many great milestones achieved. SAGE subscribers have persevered with actions to address and reduce inequities in their organisations, and together we have made great progress in advancing our shared mission to embed genuine and sustainable gender equity, diversity, and inclusion across Australia’s tertiary education and research sector.

I want to thank our subscriber institutions for their continued commitment to, and championing of the SAGE accreditation program. I also want to extend my gratitude to our dedicated Working and Special Interest Group members and program contributors for sharing their valuable time and expertise throughout the year.

As 2021 draws to a close, I am excited about the opportunities for growth and improvement that the new year presents. Several subscribers are preparing to submit their first Cygnet Award applications. This is an important milestone for Australia’s pathway to Athena Swan Silver Awards and we look forward to receiving the first of these applications in the new year.

In early 2022, we will be launching a new SAGE website with improved access to SAGE learning resources. Throughout 2022 SAGE will also be hosting a range of events and forums to provide subscribers with more opportunities to collaborate and share their learnings. The first of these events will be the Heads of Institutions Forum in February. Further information is provided below.

Earlier this month we welcomed Kate Hulm to the SAGE team in the role of Manager, Communications and Public Relations. Kate joins SAGE from the National Gallery of Australia where she was responsible for the delivery of priority projects involving extensive stakeholder engagement. She has previously held roles at The Australian National University where she spent several years leading marketing communication projects and teams. Kate will be working closely with SAGE subscribers and stakeholders in 2022.

This will be our last newsletter for 2021. Our staff will be taking a well-earned break from Friday 24 December 2021 to Monday 3 January 2022. On behalf of the entire SAGE team and the SAGE Board, I wish you a happy and safe holiday season. We look forward to working with you in 2022 as we continue to progress the implementation of the SAGE Strategic Plan.

Regards,

Dr Wafa El-Adhami
Chief Executive Officer, SAGE Ltd

PROGRAM UPDATES

Renew your subscription for 2022

Renewal reminders were sent to all subscribers in November 2021 in preparation for the commencement of annual subscription renewals in January 2022.

In light of the COVID-19 impacts experienced by all, annual subscription fees for 2022 will remain the same as the 2021 fees.

It is encouraging to see how many subscribers have already renewed their subscriptions for 2022. The final due date for subscription renewal invoices is 31 January 2022. We look forward to receiving renewals from the remaining subscribers early in the new year.

Cygnet Award applications are open now

The consultation process for the Cygnet guidance materials closed on 1 November. We thank Group members and subscribers for their engagement with this process.

The Cygnet Assessment Framework has now been finalised and published on the SAGE subscriber portal along with an updated version of the Application Form and Guidelines.

A number of subscribers are already preparing their Cygnet Award applications. A reminder that the SAGE team is available to provide one-on-one advisory support throughout the application planning and development process.

If you are intending to apply, you will need to notify SAGE of your intention to submit at least 10 weeks ahead of your intended submission date. The Intention to Submit form is available online via the SAGE application portal. Notify your intention to submit >>

The Culture Survey Working Group has been continuing its exploration of a standardised sector-wide survey tool. At the November meeting, the Group reviewed comparable surveys from the Victorian Commission for Gender Equality and Advance HE. The Group’s feedback indicated diverse interests and expectations for the SAGE survey tool. We are grateful to the Group for contributing their time and expertise to progress this work.

In early 2022, SAGE will engage a subject matter expert to develop questions in alignment with the sector’s needs, with the aim to pilot a customised survey tool sometime in the new year. A progress update will be provided in March 2022.

Following the completion of the Cygnet Assessment Framework, SAGE has turned its attention to progressing the Proposed Data Framework. Earlier this year, a Tri-Partite Working Group was established with the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) and the Victorian Commission for Gender Equality to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing.

The Proposed Data Framework will be released for sector-wide consultation in 2022, with a focus on the proposed key metrics for reporting data. The feedback will be used to further develop the Framework and ensure it is fit-for-purpose before its final release for implementation.

Call for case studies on workload allocation

The Workload Allocation Principles Matrix is nearing completion following successful presentations to SAGE subscribers at Regional Network Meetings throughout November. The Matrix has been developed by a cross-institutional Special Interest Group (SIG) to provide SAGE institutions with guidance on how to address issues of fair and equitable workload allocation for staff at all levels. We thank members of the SIG for their valuable input during the Matrix development process.

The SIG is now calling for SAGE subscribers to submit case studies and best practice examples for inclusion in the SAGE Workload Allocation Principles Guide. Please email your equitable workload allocation case studies and examples to Jen Cameron, Advisor: SAGE Accreditation Performance and Analytics. Submissions close 1 February 2021. Submit a case study >>
