RCC TIGERS RUNNER UP
FOR STATE FOOTBALL TITLE

After winning the Southern California Football Association Championship title, the Tigers entered the Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship game against the City College of San Francisco Rams. In a very close competition, the defending champion Tigers came up just short of a  consecutive Championship title. The Tigers (10-2) faced the Rams (12-0) on December 11 at Mt. San Antonio College's Hilmer Lodge Stadium. In the fourth quarter, RCC took control, but a few missteps cost them not only yards but the game. The Tigers fought to the end, but lost 22-19. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Alejandra Ramos and Savannah Leon

Alejandra Ramos and Savannah Leon were studying Cosmetology and Nursing programs when the pandemic hit. Both feeling challenged by online learning, they decided to put their education on hold and pursue their dreams of starting a business. Leon took an RCC Business class while in high school which laid the foundation for her success in business today. Alejandra's family is in the plant business, so it was a natural fit for her.

"RCC gave us a foundation to dabble in to the knowledge that we have now in horticulture," Leon said. "I took a couple of science classes in Chemistry, Biology, and also a Business course. RCC will always be a part of the story of Meraki plants and how we started as students."

"People in Riverside are so supportive," Ramos said. "Knowing that we're college students, they made this happen and now we we have a store here in downtown. It's a dream for us."

The duo plan to return to RCC and continue their academic journeys, but for now their focus is on giving back to the community through the plants and relationships they cultivate.

"Meraki Plants means to do everything with pure soul, love and creativity," said Leon. "Leaving a piece of yourself in everything you do."

Visit Meraki Plants at 3521 Main Street near the Mission Inn in downtown Riverside or follow them on Facebook.

This newsletter will regularly spotlight students from among the thousands of inspirational stories we hear. If you know a student who should be highlighted, please share relevant information with Heidi Gonsier in the office of the president.
